Gemma Smith’s ‘Adaptable’ series comprises double-sided paintings that can be transformed from flat, monochromatic surfaces into sculptural forms. They are fabricated from two painted sheets of plywood with a fabric interlayer and incised with a network of lines. While their construction in the studio is carefully planned, the works’ final compositions are not fixed - they can be reconfigured each time they are displayed.

A resplendent sunrise seen from the heights of the Blackall Range at Bald Knob. The sun is rising over the distant ocean horizon, currently obscured by low slightly ragged cumulus, but about to burst through. Its light is shining through multiple gaps down towards the sea below, creating a fan of apricot rays, while its light is radiating out upwards in almost white beams, backlighting the obscuring clouds and illuminating higher, closer clouds. The sky is a hazy blue except where cloud shadows block the light, and a deeper blue appears. The foreground is bordered by eucalypt silhouettes, and a single falling gum leaf can be seen against the clouds.

A scanned 120 negative I took as a child in 1965, in Thailand where I lived for six months during part of my father's sabbatical. It's on an estate outside Bangkok, and some of the estate workers are preparing roast chicken for a lunch banquet, by hanging birds over a metal plate and then placing a metal tin over each bird and firing a straw and wood fire around the tins. The cooking was done on the estate's parade ground, partly visible in the background, because every country estate has one of those...
I can't even remember the make of camera, but it was a pure manual rangefinder, I had to memorise aperture and shutter speeds for sunny and cloudy and DIN whatever it was film.

A tiny fly with a prominently striped, cone-shaped head and large red compound eyes. Its wings are shaped and coloured to disguise them. Its mimicry is thought to be to fool predators into thinking it's a much harder, faster target than it is.
