A line graph tracks global daily carbon dioxide emissions from aviation between 2019 and 2025, measured in megatonnes of CO₂ per day, showing both the collapse of air travel during the COVID-19 pandemic and the strong recovery that followed. In early 2020 emissions suddenly plunge to below 1.0 MtCO₂ per day as worldwide lockdowns and travel restrictions effectively halt much of global aviation. From that low point the graph shows a gradual recovery: annual averages rise from 1.9 in 2020 to 2.2 in 2021, 2.8 in 2022, 3.4 in 2023, 3.7 in 2024, and 3.9 in 2025. Coloured dots represent noisy daily emissions data while solid black lines show monthly averages and dashed black lines show annual averages. Seasonal waves are visible throughout the series, with recurring peaks during busy travel periods and dips during quieter months, but the overall trend steadily climbs upward after the pandemic disruption. By 2025 the monthly averages regularly exceed pre-pandemic highs, reaching above 4 MtCO₂ per day, indicating that aviation activity has not only recovered but surpassed previous records. The title notes that growth is slowing despite emissions reaching record highs, suggesting that while aviation demand continues to increase, the pace of expansion is becoming less steep than during the immediate rebound years after the pandemic.
