When I say "yeah I use gouache" i mean I use it straight out of the tube for a background. Mixing these sorts of thick mediums is a type of sorcery I yet have to learn. But getting more comfortable with mixing mediums (here water colours, gouache and water colour pencils) is always a good exercise!
