For Mary Welch Thompson, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, weaving white oak baskets is a doorway back to the land, the culture, and the people. 🌿 #IndigenousBasketry #EasternBandCherokee #TribalForestry
The Intertribal Timber Council and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service have signed an MOU on wildland fire management. 🌲🔥 Both parties agree to uphold Indian self-determination and Tribal sovereignty, and to create a Tribal Wildland Fire Managers' Forum. #TribalSovereignty
This is the face of someone who just found out how simple NRCS funding actually can be. 🦌 (Okay, it’s a deer from one of Braided Canopy case study's wildlife cameras) Curious what we're talking about? Check out braidedcanopy.com🌲
Penobscot Nation reframed forestry priorities to protect a deer yard critical to sustenance hunting — softwood shelter over commercial timber. EQIP-funded thinning, and the data proved it: deer clearly preferred the treated habitat. 🦌
For Avery Guy, being Indigenous is inseparable from land. Not land as a resource managed from the outside — but land as home. Where culture lives, practices are passed down, and identity is rooted. Tribal forestry doesn't just protect trees. It protects a way of life.
Big news: ITC and Sustainable Northwest received a $1.7M, five-year award from US Endowment to help Tribes turn small-diameter wood and biomass into jobs, businesses, and healthier forests. Our new Wood and Biomass Hub starts with three pilot Tribes.
Did you know fire is one of nature's most powerful planting tools? Certain trees have evolved to depend on fire to reproduce — heat melts sealed cones open, releasing seeds. It's called serotiny. Indigenous communities have understood this for generations.
For Apache people, the land has never been separate from language, song, ceremony, prayer, and traditional food. When outside programs arrive with Western science alone, they leave out the elders who stewarded these lands for generations. #ApacheNation #TribalForestry
A conversation worth watching: FSA and NRCS staffmwalking through how these programs actually work. Watch the full "USDA NRCS and FSA Programs Webinar" — now on our YouTube channel, link in bio. 🌱 #TribalForestry #NRCS #IntertribalTimberCouncil #IndigenousStewardship
For generations, Indigenous communities stewarded forests as a web. When that stewardship was removed, the consequences followed. Governing from an Indigenous lens isn't just cultural — it's what the land has always responded to. 🕸️ #TribalForestry #TrustResponsibility
New on our blog 📝 — ITC introduces Braided Canopy, a new tool helping Tribes cut through the barriers to NRCS funding and technical support. Read why relationships, support, and funding are the three braids holding it together 🌿

🌲 Introducing "Forests of the First Stewards: Menominee Nation" — a new film series & K–12 curriculum on Indigenous forestry leadership, from ancient tradition to modern stewardship. ITC is proud to sponsor this project. 🎥 forestproud.org/forest-of-the-first-stewards #forestproud
Two NRCS programs to know: EQIP pays once for new conservation work (thinning, burning, habitat restoration). CSP pays yearly for conservation you're already doing well. Not sure which fits? That's what NRCS staff are for. 🌲
"You know your land best. Tell the NRCS what you think it needs, and work through it with that mindset." Wade Christensen, Cow Creek Band of Umpqua, on what NRCS partnership taught his team. 🌲
"The project was viewed through a cultural lens, coordinating with federal and state partners on their priorities while meeting Cow Creek Umpqua's cultural and ecological needs." — Jason Robison, Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe From our case study earlier this week 🌲
Cow Creek Umpqua reclaimed stressed, overstocked forest with NRCS support — thinning conifers, restoring oak habitat, bringing fire back to the land. The lesson: relationships matter most. Full case study in bio
