Look I know we're all focused on the 🇺🇸 right now, but there are still other things going on in the world. The @irishtimes.com as part of a broader @icij.org project has dug into 🇨🇳's transnational repression activities, including here in 🇮🇪. thread:
Irish Uyghur Cultural Association - IUCA
@irishuyghurca.bsky.social
Our mission is to actively promote and preserve Uyghur culture in Irish society and among the Uyghur diaspora, while also advocating for the human rights of Uyghurs in East Turkistan and around the world.
Finally, a story about Irish citizen Nuria Zyden, who fled from Xinjiang in 2009 and continues to be harassed by Chinese police up until today. This story will surely accelerate that harassment, so she's brave for doing this. Again, tons of research about this being part of a broader pattern.
China’s intimidation of an Irish citizen in Dublin: ‘I wanted to escape. It’s scary’
One Irish citizen living in Dublin receives regular calls from the police in China and believes she is being monitored

Director of @irishuyghurca.bsky.social speaks to ICIJ about transnational repression against Uyghur people. This is part of broader research into how Chinese authorities silence activists and dissidents abroad.

Economic relationships with China should NOT come before human rights 🪧 Irish Uyghurs demonstrated outside China’s MFA Wang Yi meeting with Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris, asking the Irish government to raise the human rights abuses suffered by the Uyghur community.
📢 IUCA EVENT 🩵 NUMBERS LIMITED‼️ In collaboration with the Irish Network Against Racism, we will be hosting a training event this Saturday, informing community members about their democratic rights, how to report racist incidents, and how to engage with Irish politics & local government services 🏛
How lovely. Important to support Uyghur culture given how much it (& Tibetan & other Muslim minority) have suffered quashing in China (and shallow social washing in camps):
Anyone interested in following a new Uyghur org should give @irishuyghurca.bsky.social a follow! Irish Uyghur Cultural Association has set up in Dublin, it's a fledgling group with a lot of heart. Focusing mainly on serving the Irish community, there'll be a bit of advocacy stuff too. Follow us! 💚
Last Friday, members of our board met in Dublin to discuss our plans for 2025, visit the Taipei Representative Office in Ireland 🇹🇼, and explore the city, from Dublin Castle & St. Patrick's Cathedral to St Stephen's Green & Temple Bar! 🇮🇪🩵🌙
On this #HumanRightsDay, we at the IUCA pay special tribute to those countless Uyghur activists (and their non-Uyghur allies!) all over the world campaigning, mobilising, lobbying and advocating for the human rights of the Uyghur nation #OurRightsOurFuture 🩵
Today on Human Rights Day, we mark 76 years since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights! #StandUp4HumanRights #HumanRightsDay2024
A special thanks to Gulya Mametova for co-hosting this lovely gathering of Uyghur women living in Ireland on November 30th, attended by our co-founder Nuria. Together we reflected on the vital role we, as Uyghur mothers & women, play in preserving our traditions, culture, and language 💙
