This is bureaucratic violence. ICE quietly stopped taking fingerprints from people in detention, so USCIS denied their applications by default. Nobody weighed the merits of a single case. People's applications were thrown out because the agency holding them would not take their fingerprints.

This was one of the more diabolical Trump admin moves on immigration; ordering ICE to stop taking biometrics for detained immigrants seeking immigration benefits from USCIS, which meant that the agency would deny their applications by default.

The government doesn’t track how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. So ProPublica did. We’ve tallied more than 500 Americans held against their will in warrantless arrests and detentions during President Trump’s second term.
