I was thrilled to visit the original water lily gardens that first inspired Monet and supplied him with his water lily plants. It was incredible with thousands of varieties and colors of water lilies. Serenade of Blooms Original Oil Painting by Erin Hanson, 2025 60 x 48 in #dailyart #painting

After visiting Monet's garden in Giverny last summer, I traveled south in search of the original water lily gardens that first inspired Monet and supplied him with his water lily plants. The Latour-Mariac water lily farm was incredible--there were thousands of varieties and colors of water lilies--in fact, this is where the original non-white, cold-hardy water lilies were bred. The colorful pastel hues of the new varieties became hugely popular across Europe, and Monet played a large part in popularizing their delicate blooms. To me, this painting of Latour-Mariac water lilies encapsulates the history of the water lily image in impressionism.
