Adolphe Monticelli passed away the very year Van Gogh arrived in Paris, so their paths never crossed. Still, Vincent saw in Monticelli’s glowing color and thick, sculptural painting style a kindred spirit, saying he felt he was “continuing that man.” These paintings show why.
Unplugged for three weeks in France. The spectacular Musée Picasso, housed inside a castle looking out over the water, is where you can instantly see why the light and energy of the Riviera completely transformed his style. Good to be back!
