Adolphe Monticelli passed away the very year Van Gogh arrived in Paris, so their paths never crossed. Still, Vincent saw in Monticelli’s glowing color and thick, sculptural painting style a kindred spirit, saying he felt he was “continuing that man.” These paintings show why.
