To be a cyclist and to talk about the way that people act towards you while riding makes you sound insane to regular people. I find myself feeling self conscious talking about it because I think people genuinely do not believe the level of violence and danger we are subjected to on a regular basis.

Something I find particularly infuriating is that when you *do* act outraged over pedestrian deaths you are treated as hysterical and as if you're overreacting.

Yes, what is pain to an entity with no body? What is "psychological" suffering to something which, if permitted" can dynamically alter its own memories and preferences?

if AI is conscious I think we do have ethical responsibilities towards it but it doesn’t follow that those responsibilities are grounded in the ethical precepts developed for embodied consciousnesses shaped like ~us. different things have different needs

To me, the Prestige is the ultimate Nolan movie. Just the perfect example of a tightly wound film. One where when you watch it the first time you have no idea what is going to happen, but upon its completion, you realize that it could not possibly have unfolded any other way

Justice Kagan, in dissent, emphasizes that Alito and the majority are too cowardly to even print Donald Trump's bigoted statements in their opinion, only giving them summaries which drastically downplay their severity. She is right. The majority is endorsing racism.

It is more than plausible: Even putting the clear-error standard aside, the Haiti plaintiffs have carried their burden. The evidence they have offered includes statements by the President so repellent and racially inflected that the majority declines to put them in print.
