there's a really great book on this. they call it the "fawning" response - the stress response of "fight vs flight" also has two more responses - freeze and fawn freeze (think possums in trouble) fawn (appease the person(s)/force(s) causing harm)

An abuser uses the pattern of abuse to claim he is not abusive. Yes, this is how people who are abused try to assuage violent people, asswipe. Took his ex-father-in-law long enough to pull his head out of his ideology ass to speak up.
