For a thing (#asecs) I have just reread Olga Tokarczuk's behemoth novel The Books of Jacob. The whole is brilliant, but my favourite bit remains the early ch introducing the #18thc poetess Elżbieta Drużbacka, & titled "of bloodstained silks," where the narrator imagines a "university for women."

Title page: "The Books of Jacob, or, A Fantastic Journey Across 7 Borders, 5 Languages, and 3 Major Religions, Not counting the minor sects; told by the dead, supplemented by the author, drawing from a range of books, and aided by imagination, the which being the greatest natural gift of any person that the wise ight have it for a record, that my compatriots reflection, layperson gain some understanding, and melancholy souls obtain some slight enjoyment." The graphic--sun beam or moon beam across a dark sky, which has a fringe as though it were a prayer shawl--might suggest enlightenment.

Some news! I am writing a book about everyday bewitchment using, among other records, Napier's casebooks, which I spent four years transcribing. I want to move away from sensationalist narratives. I am super glad to have met Fabienne who is amazing. I've had a can of Red Bull to celebrate.
