I love learning about artists' unexpected interests. James Ward, 'probably the first Englishman of fame to grow a beard in the nineteenth century' (Basil Taylor), wrote an impassioned defence of the beard c.1840. Truly ahead of his time.

Images from the Rachel Rose exhibition at Pilar Corrias, London. Beautifully painted renderings of historic British landscapes by Constable (cloud studies like those in the RA collection) and others, seemingly in a state of dissolving.

Thomas Gainsborough's 'Girl with Pigs', purchased by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1882 and so marking a moment of respect and commonality in the careers of the two great rivals. Now in the collection at Castle Howard, Yorkshire.
