Some young lads in the train - 12? 13? - are playing that game where you each take it in turns to shout “penis” progressively louder and an exasperated commuter just told them to “grow up” but honestly, I like to see the old ways kept up

I think the mistake Peter makes here - & it is a common one, made, indeed, by the author himself* - is to compare them to realist literary fiction of the time, when they are almost a branch of fantasy *Fleming was a huge Somerset Maugham fan, & openly admitted he was often trying to imitate him

10. I think the James Bond novels. They're....not awful.... but not good....and seriously odd. I read nearly all of them about 20 years ago

Last month another of the guys came up to me & said “OI! Need a word with you!” & I didn’t know what was coming, he took me into the corner and leaned in and growled “you remember what you said to me the last time we met?” and I thought this could go wrong and he continued “well, it really helped”

May be true in the US, but I’ve been doing BJJ for ~20 yrs here in the UK and they are the nicest, most supportive people I know. One of our guys is moving cities to live with his wife & we all saw him off & made sure he got a last roll each (admittedly I calfsliced him a *bit* but it was emotional)

One thing I have noticed about BJJ since 2012 or so: folks studying this are way more aggro than folks studying anything else. There have always been Cobra-Kai types running dojos but most good teachers across styles hammer it home that fighting is always the last thing you want to do.

Ha yes, they had cordage! But then the ‘moral of the story’ is rarely the moral of the story. EG anyone who knows anything about slings will tell you the moral of “David&Goliath” is not necessarily “even the little guy can be victorious with God on his side” but “superior military technology wins”

There's a lot of reference to the Icarus myth recently, and people always assume the moral of the story is "don't fly too close to the sun". I think it should be "wtf are you doing using WAX for a job like that FFS?"

Given we regularly discuss whether an alternative national anthem is required, and what it would be, I feel I should report that in this Corfiot hotel the DJ just played “Mr Brightside” and every single Brit, tho strangers all, went FULL ON BATSHIT, while everyone else looked on, bemused
