Such an unfathomly beautiful world we are destroying. For me, Indigenous teachings (eg https://worldviewliteracy.org/) offer a useful path forward. Also #nonviolence! Texada Island, qathet region, BC, Canada

On this day in 1984, Gaëtan Dugas died in Quebec City. As an HIV patient, he was erroneously vilified and mischaracterized as Patient Zero of the North American AIDS epidemic. His story has emphasized the importance of accuracy and empathy in public health narratives. 🧵1/8

Grateful @kellyrichmondbc.bsky.social spoke out re: Tillbury #LNG. Subsidizing fossilfuels threatens our future, especially when subsidies go to #MAGA billionaires (some w Epstein links!) Will @eby-david.bsky.social & #PRSC candidate @randeneneillmlabc.bsky.social work to end this?

As the world faces ongoing economic uncertainty, #Budget2026 makes careful choices to protect what matters most to British Columbians. We’re safeguarding the services people rely on, while strengthening and growing BC’s economy. @brendavancouver.bsky.social

With BC burning, it’s worth asking why the biggest pool of $$ in the province - our PENSIONS - is funding climate arson.🔥🌏🔥 The BC Investment Management Corp (BCI) manages ~$313.7 BILLION for 10+ public sector pension plans. It’s a climate emergency, yet BCI loves fossil firms.⛽️🛢️ Let’s look!👇 1/x

The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) has no net-zero commitment and has not updated its climate plan since 2022.

Beyond STILL not having a net-zero commitment, perhaps most troubling is that BCI doesn’t divest from or exclude ANY fossil firms. (Examples later in 🧵) BCI scores an ‘F‘ on this part of the @shiftaction.bsky.social report card. And it has a minimum $8 - $10 BILLION in fossil investments. 3/x

Instead, BCI invests huge $$ in oil + gas + coal, and trumpets “engagement“ with firms - as if a shareholder vote will somehow change Exxon’s business model. See how BCI’s ESG policy👇 doesn’t mention divestment or exclusion. A lot of words, not much concrete climate action and no urgency. 5/x

So now here’s a look at how BCI is investing OUR pension$ in climate arson! 🔥🌏🔥 Example 1: BCI has ~$72.22M in Cheniere Energy, the world’s #2 LNG firm. Its Sabine Pass + Corpus Christi plants have a history of breaking air + H2O pollution laws, and emit the most GHGs of any 🇺🇸LNG terminals. 6/x

Example 3: BCI has ~$143.87M in Exxon Mobil Corp, the largest US fossil firm. It has a sordid history of denying science, killing climate action, and nuking nature (e.g. Exxon Valdez). Per Carbon Majors, it‘s the #5 biggest CO2e emitting entity ever. Hooray for BCI’s meaningful ESG principles! 8/x

Example 4: BCI has ~$11.51M in Valero Energy Corp, the Texas-based owner of 15 oil refineries (in Canada/US/UK) with 3.2M bpd🛢️throughput capacity. The world’s #2 maker of corn ethanol and “renewable diesel”, its joint venture to make jet fuel at a Port Arthur refinery doesn‘t sound very green.🤢 9/x

Example 5: BCI has ~$16.25M in Schlumberger NV (SLB), the world’s #1 oilfield services firm. It’s no exaggeration to say that SLB tech + expertise keeps fascist Russia‘s oil flowing; the Kremlin depends on this to bankroll its survival and genocidal war on our ally 🇺🇦. Investors = enablers. 10/x

There is, for example, a world of difference between investments to create something new and investments to pick off Canadian companies and public assets. We need to ask will the investment contribute to our cultural, digital, economic and democratic sovereignty.
