My photo shows a ceramic pouring jug with a bold white-on-dark floral design viewed from the side with handle at left. It is decorated with a white, many-petalled flower with a round centre, like a stylised daisy. The flower fills the surface of the side of the vessel, radiating in sunburst style against a dark background. Further white painted decoration includes a band just above the base of the jug, two bands on the neck; at the base and in the middle of the neck, and thinner white bands on the handle and on the beaked spout.

The jug has a rounded body which tapers gently to a narrow flat base. From the top of the rounded body rises a short neck that angles upwards into a narrow ‘beaked’ spout, which is slightly chipped at the end. There is a single loop handle attached between the shoulder and the top of the neck. This type of jug is known as a beaked eye-jug, due to the two relief knobs under the beaked spout. Height approx 26 cm. From Phaistos.

This Sunday 3rd May all are welcome to the opening of the Ceramics Ireland Annual Exhibition. The venue is the National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin. The exhibition is being opened by Gavin Friday and runs from 3rd-16th May 2026 from 10am until 5pm daily. #ceramics #dublin #botanicgardens

The Lie, Mary O'Malley

The lie that a protester shot dead by ICE
in Minneapolis was a terrorist, the lie
that killers set loose on their own cities
are victims, the lie that a poem is a gun.

A poem is not a gun, though a poem
from the pen of Akhmatova or Neruda
or Mandelstam, not one of whom ever
to my knowledge fired a shot, might

in certain conjugations of the stars
lodge in the heart and spread out
across mountains and borders
across languages and the sea and you

can’t shoot it down, or lock it up
or alter its pixels. It is played
on the hollowed reeds of dead bones.
A poem like that is a bomb.

To bring a smile to your face this weekend … An ancient bowl with human feet! Made in predynastic Egypt around 5,500 years ago. The Met www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti... 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows a hemispherical red pottery bowl with underside supports in the shape of a pair of human feet. It is handmade from red Nile clay, slipped and polished to give a light surface sheen. The front of the bowl tips slightly forward as if offering its contents. The museum catalogue entry informs us that a bowl standing on feet is very similar in form to the Egyptian hieroglyph meaning "to bring." Dimensions: diameter 13.2 cm x width 13.7 cm x depth 9.8 cm. This type of bowl is dated to Predynastic Egypt, Late Naqada I-early Nagada lI period, circa 3700-3450 BC. I saw this bowl on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The museum purchased the bowl from M. Mohassib in Egypt in 1910.
