Fantasy author (jasminegower.com) and freelance book editor (publishing.jasminegower.com). I am also Normal about video games.

For writers worried that they won't be able to "prove" their work isn't Spicy Autocomplete--worry not. You thought about every choice and will be able to talk about those choices easily and clearly. Folks who used the slop machine didn't make choices and won't have anything to say about why

I've been having trouble securing editing work this past month, and yesterday I had confirmed the reason I suspected. Someone has been undercutting me. I also found out by how much. Well over half.

the severe bummer of waiting for weeks for an audio book from the library only to DNF it half an hour in because if you hear one more tortured metaphor you're going to throw yourself into a bog

Semi-regular discourse contribution: any time I've ever had editing clients who come into the arrangement with a bunch of bravado about how ready they are for the edits to kick their ass and tear them to shreds (not my job, I am not a dominatrix), they are ALWAYS the least receptive to feedback.

While cleaning today, found this old birthday card my mom made me when my beagle Valentine was still alive. Also found a picture frame just the size for it, so up it goes on my wall. Still miss you, sweet puppy 💚

A framed homemade card featuring a picture of an elderly and barrel-chested beagle looking at the camera and panting slightly. A caption under the picture of the beagle reads "...aaaaarrrrff...... ...aaaaarrrfff..........."

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." - me when I realize I almost bought Taylor Farms salad kits on my last grocery trip and ended up getting Fresh Express instead

DISCOURSE CONTRIBUTION: As someone on both sides of the author/editor divide, the key to sussing out AI use is not notes, drafts, or outlines. The #1 indicator that a text is AI generated (or otherwise plagiarized) is if its supposed author is unwilling or incapable of talking shop about it.

Google has started putting ads directly into my inbox and disguising them to look like unread emails, so I guess that's my sign to finally switch over to using my website domain for emails -_-

me writing a piece of fiction: "I cannot use an exclamation mark as the whole thing will sound unhinged." me writing an email: "Do you! Want! To send me! The File! I would really! Like! The file!"

Absolutely embarrassing for Maine Democrats to be releasing this statement now and not over the Nazi tattoo. Those women all had to re-traumatize themselves and be cast as liars and villains by the worst misogynists of our nation bc you all decided Nazi tats were fine, actually. Disgraceful.

Statement from Maine Democratic Party Leadership on Allegations Against Graham Platner
Augusta, Maine - "Maine Democratic Party leadership takes seriously our responsibility to hold every candidate who seeks to represent our state to the highest standard.
Over the past several weeks, multiple women have made serious, credible allegations against Graham Platner. Today's statements take those allegations even further.
Maine Democratic Party leadership is calling on Graham Platner to withdraw as the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate.
The Maine Democratic Party leadership stands with women and survivors, and that principle does not bend based on party affiliation. We respect the women who made the hard decision to come forward. Speaking up is often costly.
We are entrusted with deciding who represents our values and who carries our banner. That responsibility requires judgment, leadership, and a willingness to act when circumstances demand it.
This Senate race comes at a pivotal moment in the struggle against a government, supported by Senator Collins, that serves the interests of the wealthy and powerful at the expense of ordinary Maine people. It is essential that we refocus this campaign on that struggle".
