Belonging somewhere for a long time can make us forget what it felt like not to belong. Hospitality often begins with remembering. If there is a place where you currently feel you belong, who helped you feel that way? What did they do?

We once had to remove a 100 year-old ash tree from our yard. Over time, its absence became more noticeable. Rooms were hotter. The light around the house changed. Grief reveals absences like that. We miss the person, then we spend years discovering all the forms their shelter took.
