My sister died of Covid because care facility employees weren't isolating and came to work sick. Because she was a disabled adult woman over 50 her life was not seen as having value. The villains in the Covid story are banal, every-day sorts of little monsters.

I've said before how Paul Sun-Hyung Lee is an absolute master of the physical of his characters: Teva's swagger, the shuffle of Kim, Choi's confidence. Just watched Avatar S2 w/ my son & they haul Iroh off to jail ... if they are sticking to the cartoon, this actor is going to nail what comes next.

At times it feels like the crimes are egregious because they either 1) have no intention of letting there be elections and being accountable to the law or 2) they know that GOP voters will never abandon the brand, no matter how criminal it becomes - and maybe are even energized by the crime.

CBS reports that Ashley Moody did precisely what the entire GOP has accused Tim Walz of doing -- and yet, somehow, that crack fraud task force has not arrested the GOP nominee for Senate. www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/f...

As Florida Attorney General, it was Moody and her office that approved the diversion of $10 million of taxpayer money to the Hope Florida Foundation. And the Attorney General did so without placing any of the safeguards or guardrails her office would typically require to make sure the money was properly spent.

These funds were intended to expand Medicaid for children in Florida, but instead they ended up in the bank accounts of a pair of political action committees, one of which was controlled by the governor and his chief of staff, James Uthmeier.

And that was the money that DeSantis used to defeat Amendment 3.

Amendment 3 garnered 56% of the vote in November 2024, just shy of the 60% needed to pass. And two months after the amendment failed, DeSantis appointed Moody to the United States Senate, and he appointed Uthmeier to replace Moody as attorney general.

The diversion of $10 million from a Medicaid settlement into the Hope Florida Foundation and then into the political action committees fighting Amendment 3 was uncovered through a series of legislative hearings in 2025 in the Florida House. And it prompted one Republican legislator to call it a criminal act.

"This is a misuse of Medicaid money," Republican State Rep. Alex Andrade told CBS Miami in August 2025. "This is money laundering."

This is how I view initiatives and "visions" from Provosts and Presidents: They can make ritual play out of anything. Once their attention shifts they will be wacking at a different tree and chanting some other nonsense. 0 reason for me to give more than the tiniest sliver of brain space to it.

When I was a camp counselor, I came upon a group of kids in the woods all standing in a circle around a tree, hitting the trunk with sticks in rhythmic unison while chanting.

Hutterites in central Montana moved 1000s of acres from dryland grain (barley & wheat) to hay. No export contracts combined with drought means cattle will be a goldmine anf grain a loser - if you can keep the cattle alive. Much less barley growing means cereal and beer costs are going up.

Is it possible to: Step 1: Declare computer science. Step 2: Declare a music minor so you can register for music classes. Step 3: Proceed to take all the music classes and get signed permissions from instructors for majors-only classes. Step 4: The last quarter, swap to music and graduate. ?

President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/PzUDagM

#Historian asking a few quick questions: Did Nolan get the swan wrong that Helen's mom mate's with? Was Polyphemus wearing Golden Age garb instead of Dark Age garb? Did the sirens sing using a modern scale? Can I get a historically accurate Godzilla vs. King Kong next? Maybe Little Red Riding Hood?

A wider trend of refusing to ackowledge the realities of mortality and humanity. We get sick, we reproduce, we make smells and dounds, we have heartache, we make mistakes, we change... humanity is loud and messy and joyful, and, yes, we hope full of crying babies.

This is absolutely a function of not seeing children as full humans who are as much a part of the public as adults. Children are people! They are allowed to exist! Sometimes they cry because that is one of the major ways they are capable of communicating!

The bulk of US higher ed happens outside of R1 unis, and the decline in international money for smaller schools is devastating. If we can't do our jobs, guess who has fewer US applicants for "top tier" grad programs? This is a problem for all of higher ed., and all the Uni presidents need to shout.

Anna Kornbluh@annakornbluh.bsky.social · 2w ago

the best day for the presidents of every R1 to hold a press conference screaming that higher ed is our second largest export and destroying it is economic sabotage and soft power detonation was Jan 21st 2025. the next best day is tomorrow.
