Fantasy writer. Non-human protags. Present tense is great! ***On a social media vacation until July 1. Will check in occasionally.***
Books I've read more than once, books I've read once, and books I've yet to read.
Enough of the horrors and doom scrolling. Let's talk about something fun. How do you arrange your books?
MOTU. I had the toys as a kid, and I love that it doesn't care about canon.
Author brethren and sestren, if you could write for any famous IP what would you pick? Doesn't have to be your favourite world, just something you think you could have fun with. For me, it'd have to be either ALIEN or League of Legends.
I always use modern dialogue in my fantasy books. My hope is that it makes the characters more relatable. BTW, Tower of Mud and Straw was a delight to read! Barsukov really nailed the ending.
When *Tower of Mud and Straw* first came out, I got a lot of flak for using “modern” dialogue in a fantasy novel. “Glad” to see people haven’t changed their minds. #Odyssey
This is the the smallest my TBR pile has been in about six years!
Whoa... that is a weird coincidence. Someone needs to send a copy of Awakened to those researchers.
I WROTE AN ENTIRE BOOK ABOUT WHY THIS IS A BAD IDEA STOP INVENTING THE TORMENT NEXUS
My current read! Read the first quarter in one day (which is a lot for me).
The Sauútiverse was represented by @genni.bsky.social and @wtalabi.com for the Sauúti Terrors launch at Swancon in Perth last weekend. 🚀💫📚 It was an amazing reception of the Sauutiverse down under with signings galore! Get your copies: sauuti.com/sauuti-terro...
Oh! For some reason, I thought this wasn't releasing until July??? Well, this is better! Treating myself to the hardcover this time.

Here's mine! The characters turned out even better than I pictured in my mind. It was created by the very skilled @kimsokol.bsky.social
Lets have a cover day! Share your most recent release's cover and tell us who made it! If you say AI I will explode you with my mind! #WritingPrompt
Two sweet characters living in a cruel society. This story has stayed in my mind long after the reading.
I'm pleased to share Antano's thoughtful review of Far Removed 🤍 I took a chance writing something that was a departure from the mainstream fantasy books I was coming across, and it's lovely to see those differences recognised and appreciated.
My "World of Monsters" trilogy started in 1994. After countless dreadful drafts, I finally found my writing voice in 2018. The books should be printed by this December and I'm hoping to launch at Montreal Worldcon!
I started writing All Our Sins in 1991 but was way too young to do it any justice. The story stayed with me. I took a stab at writing it in my early 20s but couldn't do it justice then either. Now Book 1 is published and Books 2 and 3 are on the way! Have you ever had something stay with you?
Finished this morning! Awakened explores the horror that comes about when our choices badly affect other people. Reader beware, you may never want to make a decision again.
it’s #WorldBookDay and #WomenInHorror month, so i’m obliged to remind you all that my horror dystopia novel, Awakened, a somewhat Frankenstine meets The Yellow Wallpaper gothic tale, is out and available for your reading pleasure!🐦⬛ linktr.ee/lauracelliott
Happy 4th decaversary to Steve! If you're looking for an entertaining urban (rural?) fantasy, I suggest trying The Erstwhile Tyler Kyle.
I turn 40 this week (eep! 😅) and would love a share of my pinned (or any of my posts below!) as a birthday thing! Normally I feel bad about milking a birthday for promo, but . . . honestly who cares. I'm tired and the world sucks. 🤣
I was shouting "Noooo!" from start to finish. Cruel, heartbreaking and one of the most addictive books I've read in a while.
THE FIRST SIN is out! Dive into a gritty, spicy, dark adult scifantasy, perfect for fans of JC's Avatar, Battlestar Galactica, and Babylon 5. Follow Tårik as he struggles to survive in exile all while ignoring signs he is the harbinger of prophecy. https://ubl.akairondragon.ca/tfs
I have a lot of favs, but today I'll go with @plstuart-author.bsky.social. The Drowned Kingdom Saga has had me hooked for years. Book 6 landing in three months!
Pro reader tip: not only are there more books in the world than you can read in a lifetime, there are more awesome indie books than you could. So what I'm saying is, you better get busy! 😂 QRP or comment with your favorite indie author(s) to give them a boost today!
Been reading this one since last week. A tigress assassin, a crystal statue crime boss, and more!
Hey, instead of watching the Harry Potter trailer, I've got a better idea. Why not buy books and art from the trans people Rowling loves to hurt? Let's start with me! This is The Knowing Doll, you can get it on Itch.io, physical next week, audio next month! hollidayvermont.itch.io/the-knowing-...
One of only 8 books that I've ever read twice!
The #transrightsreadathon is coming up! If you like unusual books, literary horror that combines a pop, camp sensibility with darker themes, & Twin Peaks, may I humbly suggest: books2read.com/u/boB9YL steve-westenra.itch.io/the-erstwhil... #transauthor Art by @littleevil0ne.bsky.social
And here's the front cover!
A book cover for @jaycroberts.bsky.social! Front cover crop, full wrap below. This was a lot of fun, and my years of doing Star Wars OC commissions with all sorts of fun skin colours came in handy for sure. (Currently open for work, book cover and otherwise!)
Here's the wrap-around cover for my first book, Cast Out! Looking for something similar? Kim's an amazing illustrator and a delight to work with.
The full front and back!
The Sapphire Heart. I ordered this pretty #spfbo 11 contestant from a small bookstore. It took a few weeks to get here, but I have a feeling the wait will be worth it.
I moved to present tense a few years ago. Now it's all I use. I like the enhanced immediacy. Khan Wong and Ciel Pierlot use it very effectively. It was "Bluebird" that made me switch.
How do you feel about the use of present tense in stories? It always feels awkward to me to use as a writer or to read as a reader. Short bursts of it are okay, though #writingq #WritingCommunity
Ordered this one a couple days ago. I've been reading Bacon's stories for years.
Sauúti Terrors, edited by @genni.bsky.social @stephenembleton.bsky.social and Cheryl S. Ntumi, is a well balanced anthology that allows the reader to dive into horror with the particular flavour given by the Sauútiverse. Some thoughts: jamreads.com/reviews/saut... 💙📚
Read this one again last week. I still love that Agent Roach scene!
While listening to a publishing podcast today, I heard mention of just how tough it was to launch a debut in the pandemic. And I can tell you: yes. It was. Anyway, this was mine & it's a lot of fun! Help a pandemic debut out and give it a go? www.barnesandnoble.com/w/captain-mo...
Just saw the rough of the cover art for the first book in my series. Even better than I pictured in my mind!
The covers in this series always catch my attention. Book purchase imminent!
SciFi-Fantasy cover reveal!✨🚀 Rarkin's Monster Containment team consists of; sharp shooter Amon (they/ them), my autistic MC Rarkin (he/him), Miona (she/her) and Rinth (he/him). (Yes, sexy uniforms DO indicate ace characters 😉.) ♠️🌈📚🪐📚💙📚🧠: elisecarlson.com/sythe-series/ Art by Lawrence Mann (1/2)
This one carries an emotional kick to the chest. I suspect it'll reach the top 10.
After losing the SPFBO lottery in '24, I am excited to share that my debut made it in this year. Best of luck to all my fellow contestants, and wishing other opportunities to those who won't be joining us. I'm lowering the ebook price for the next month.
I read this one about a year ago. An excellent choice by the #SFINCS3 judges!
Oh wow! I had no idea what to expect when I threw my hat into the ring, but I'm honored to announced A Hunger with No Name is a #SFINCS3 semi-finalist! Thank you to the judges, the other authors in the Team WIP cohort, and my fellow semi-finalists!
If this is what I think it is, a new purchase is in my future
Whaaaattt is Amazon up to with this sticker?? This isn't a book store sticker that comes off easy... (They put one on every copy)
