ZERO DAY ATTACK A ten-part series on China's infiltration of Taiwanese society through grey zone tactics, from elite capture in the military to funding social media influencers and local politicians. Commendable focus on how people who have business or family in China may react in a strait crisis.

Did Netflix create Taiwan’s TV renaissance? I argue no. Long before streaming, Taiwan spent three decades building the institutions, talent, and creative ecology behind today’s acclaimed dramas. As PTS faces deep budget cuts, this history matters more than ever. newbloommag.net/2026/08/03/t...

Each time a "historical claim" by the CPP appears in media, it should be followed with: "Historians say that this claim is false." Editors have no trouble doing that for many similarly bogus claims, from conspiracy theories to flat earth. The lack of such correctives helps legitimate China's lies.

My column for Monday. Inspired by Macabe Keliher's excellent paper on how Taiwan became "Liuqiu", I glance at the problem of how the PRC's Taiwan history is a construct scholars know is fake, but is seldom challenged in the media. www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat/ar...

1/2) Made chick’n & dumplings (vegan) using Taiwan-grown stoneground wheat flour (from 十八麥/18 Wheat) for first time. Might have been coincidence, but without mentioning change in flour, family thought dumplings had a much richer, more complex, nutty flavor.

A white bowl of vegan chicken and dumplings sits on a light speckled countertop, filled with a hearty vegetable stew of carrots, peas, celery, cabbage, and shredded vegan chicken in a golden broth. Two large, rustic dumplings rest on the surface, garnished with fresh Taiwanese celery leaves, hot sauce and cracked black pepper. A second bowl of the same soupk is partially visible in the lower left corner.

Taiwan's Indigenous peoples are the original owners of this land. Yet new settlers referred to them as "savages" and "mountain compatriots." Name rectification came in 1997 through a constitutional amendment. Aug 1 declared Indigenous Peoples' Day in 2005. Siraya just recognized as the 17th tribe.

Indigenous peoples are the original owners of Taiwan. Nevertheless since more than four hundred years ago, they have been reigned by foreign regimes and given different names. For instance, during the rule of the Qing Dynasty, indigenous peoples were called “fan”, meaning barbarian. Qing used the term ‘cooked/tamed/civilized fan’ for those who had pledged their allegiance, and ‘raw/wild/uncivilized fan’ to define those people who had not submitted to Qing rule. During Japanese rule, the Japanese government referred to them as ‘fan’ or ‘Takasago-zoku’. During the early period of Chinese Nationalist Kuomintang(KMT) rule, the term ‘shanbao’, meaning ‘mountain compatriots’, was invented. All these terms are discriminatory, stigmatized and invented by the rulers. Indigenous peoples themselves did not have the right to determine their own names.
