A black (head, uppers, wings and tail) and white (lowers) bird with a yellow beak (dirty at the tip from digging in the dirt) is walking across a grass lawn on its pale pink legs. I saw this bird at the Akureyri Botanical Gardens digging in the flower beds. Before this, I had only seen oystercatchers at the shore on the rocks. It surprised me a bit, but I enjoyed getting the close look.

Another #Critterday post from my recent trip. I had seen humpback whales before but I had never gotten a good look at anything but the tail. But this time I got a look at the rostrum, splashguard and water emerging from the baleen. See alt for details. #travel #nature 🐳 #photography 📷

The front part of a humpback whale can be seen skimming the surface of the water shortly before diving. The front part of the skull that makes up the upper jaw is called the rostrum and can be clearly seen with sea water filtering through the baleen (the whale's filtering system that it uses to catch food while expelling the water). The baleen can't really be seen, but I found it cool to be able to see the process. Behind the rostrum is a small hump. This is called the splashguard and helps keep water from entering the blowhole (which is directly behind the splashguard but unseen in the photo). Anyway, I geeked out a bit on this and when down a rabbit hole just trying to figure out what I was seeing.
