I’d like to think there was some additional context when he gave the talk. Unfortunately, this slide has already hit LinkedIn, and people need something to talk about in those Monday morning meetings. Expect an increase in the use of the term “applied mathematics.” Plan accordingly.

Basically, I don’t think it really addresses the reference class problem, at least as discussed by philosophers.

I finally have a regular meeting in my life that is every bit as slow and painful as any faculty meeting I had in academia. Achievement unlocked.
“Some philosophers have imagined that to start an inquiry it was only necessary to utter a question whether orally or by setting it down upon paper …” is the first thing I thought of when I saw this.
