As he carried her toward the bedroom, she wrapped both arms around his neck almost instinctively, unable to stop smiling no matter how hard she tried. He glanced at her with exaggerated innocence. “Oh. I forgot something.” She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “What?” “I love you too.” #KaiGen4

Without another word he bent slightly, one arm slipping beneath her knees while the other wrapped securely around her back. Sora barely had time to squeak before the floor disappeared beneath her. #KaiGen4

Before she could come up with a sarcastic response, both his hands cradled her face with such unbelievable tenderness that she instinctively leaned into them. Then he kissed her passionately. Sora melted into him almost immediately. #KaiGen4

Connor closed his eyes briefly as though savoring hearing them. When he opened them again, his entire face had changed. “Took you long enough.” #KaiGen4

He leaned back just enough to look at her, a smile with an affection so obvious it made her chest ache. “Can you say it again?” She blinked at first until understanding dawned across her face. A nervous smile found its way onto her lips. “I love you.” #KaiGen4

Connor stepped closer until hardly any space remained between them. Her body stayed rigid, her hands hovered uncertainly beside her. “I’ve imagined this conversation so many times,” he admitted quietly, his voice vibrating softly against her hair. “None of the versions ended like this.” #KaiGen4

“Right.” Her voice sounded strangely empty now, as she turned. “I guess you don’t want me anymore, so I’ll just—” Warm fingers wrapped gently around her wrist. She stopped and when she looked back, he was smiling. “Can I talk now?” #KaiGen4

She’d said it, but Connor just stared at her. The silence stretched. One second. Two. Five. Ten. Every heartbeat became another confirmation she’d made the biggest mistake of her life. #KaiGen4

“I…” The word caught in her throat. It should have been easy, it’s only three words. Yet somehow she’d never actually said them herself. Not to Mathias. Not to anyone. Her heartbeat became deafening. “I love you.” #KaiGen4

“But these past weeks, I tried so hard to prove myself right.” She stopped long enough to breathe. “I kept telling myself eventually I’d stop thinking about you. But… I never did.” She smiled weakly, as she forced herself to keep going. “I don’t want to run anymore, Connor.” #KaiGen4

“After Mathias… I kept telling myself I’d never let someone matter that much again. I convinced myself that if I left first, if I ended things before they became too serious…” She laughed softly, but there wasn’t any humor inside it. “I thought I was protecting myself.” #KaiGen4

“I ran away that day because…” She swallowed. “Because everything was becoming too much.” The confession tasted bitter. “I thought what I was feeling was wrong. I thought… being in a relationship meant I was about to lose myself again.” #KaiGen4

He folded his arms across his chest—not defensively exactly, more as though he were holding himself together—and simply nodded. Sora stared at the floor because looking at him made everything infinitely harder. “I’m sorry.” She heard Connor inhale. #KaiGen4

Connor definitely hadn’t expected to see Sora at his apartment, just the sight of her made his chest beat hard but he tried to stay calm. “What are you doing here?” Sora lowered her eyes to the floorboards. “I need to say something and can you please not interupt me until I’m done.” #KaiGen4

“…I don’t understand—” “I do, I’m sorry for wasting your time.” Without a second thought she turned around and left his apartment, leaving Diego stunned. #KaiGen4

The realization arrived so suddenly it almost stole the air from her lungs. It had never stopped being Connor. She’d simply buried it beneath fear. Diego was still talking. #KaiGen4

𝘐𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯'𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶. Why? Why had she said that? If she truly never wanted another relationship why specify him? Her heartbeat became strangely loud. She didn’t want 𝘢 relationship. She wanted 𝘩𝘪𝘮. Connor. #KaiGen4

She interrupted him. “If I wanted something serious, it wouldn’t be with someone like you.” She turned from him but she could hear Diego’s angry words faintly. None of it really reached her, because her own words were still echoing inside her head. #KaiGen4

“So you agreed because you thought I’d change my mind? That I’d eventually realize how wonderful you were and suddenly want the white picket fence.” “Sora—” She pinched the bridge of her nose. “You agreed,” she said quietly. “I thought—” #KaiGen4

Diego stared at her in astonishment. “What’s wrong with 𝘮𝘦?” He scoffed, “Sora we’re adults, we’re not in uni anymore.” She looked back at him. “So?” “I thought we’d outgrown this 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘭 thing.” #KaiGen4

The room suddenly felt smaller. The kitchen that had become so comfortable only moments before now seemed to close in around her. She slid off the countertop. “Woohoo isn’t a relationship, what’s wrong with you?” #KaiGen4

She pulled back just enough to look at him properly. “What did you just say?” Diego frowned slightly, clearly confused. “We’ve been together for a while now.” He shrugged one shoulder as though it was obvious. “You practically live here anyway. Half your clothes are in my bedroom.” #KaiGen4

His lips found the curve beneath her jaw before moving slowly down her neck, and somewhere against her skin his voice murmured something too quietly for her distracted mind to catch. “Hm?” He smiled against her throat. “I said move in with me.” #KaiGen4

He kissed her with the kind of familiarity that came from long moments together, slow enough to linger, absentminded enough that it almost felt routine now. Sora responded automatically, letting herself drift into the comforting haze she'd become so accustomed to. #KaiGen4

The afternoon sunlight spilled lazily through the kitchen windows in Diego’s apartment, warming the countertop beneath her legs as Diego stood between them, his hands resting comfortably against her waist. #KaiGen4
