Spent the day in classrooms at Randolph Elementary school in Arlington. Reasoning, routines, small-group instruction, and learning stations were all underway in the third week of school. Thank you for inviting me, Carlos Ramirez.

Cohort 2 at Fort Belvoir ES in Fairfax County, VA ended today. The Math Workshop professional learning was such a pleasure to facilitate. This group of educators reflected on their current state and made strong, reasonable goals for next steps. I can't wait to continue partnering with them.

My work with Arlington Public Schools always brings me joy. The leadership is thoughtful, and the educators are dedicated. Today I had the pleasure of working with elementary coaches, and it was wonderful to hear them discussing the great things happening in their schools.

Another spectacular day at Fort Belvoir ES, and I'm already excited for my time there again next week. These teachers just started their school year and were still willing to spend the day lesrning more about math I struction. My goal: To be worth the sub plans!

I can tell how much math talk I'll hear in a classroom just by looking at the desks! Kids who sit together are more likely to talk together. If you want more discourse, try moving a few desks into clusters this week. It's a small shift that makes a big difference!

Halfway up this hike, huffing and puffing, I really wanted to turn around. I'm so glad I didn't! Standing at the top, proud of myself, I kept thinking: this is the feeling I want kids to have in math. Not because it was easy, but because they stuck with something challenging!

Today in Math Methods, the topic was early number development: the learning trajectory for counting, counting strategies, & common misunderstandings. We explored ways to give young students opportunities to count, & the noise in the classroom let me know that these adult students loved it too!

Carlin Springs Elementary was amazing yesterday. A new curriculum resource always means some questions. Our new resource helps us to teach within our math workshop model. The research, the beliefs, and the tenets ground us in creating the best learning experiences for students.

Started my day today at Claremont Immersion school in Arlington , and boy was it 🔥🔥🔥. These teachers hold high expectations for students and for themselves. We discussed how math workshop aligns to productive beliefs and the research. Their students are fortunate to have them.

We packed a lot in to a day at Falling Creek Elementary in Chesterfield County, VA. We focused on creating structures that work without draining the life out of the teachers. 3rd-5th teachers dug into multiplication/division. K-2nd worked on addition/subtraction. Loved this amazing group!

Arlington Public Schools has a special place in my heart. ❤️ So, working with their new elementary teachers today brought me so much joy! Their insightful conversations and thoughtful questions made our work together powerful! Thank you for the invitation!

I was back in one of my happy places today at Handley High School in Winchester Public Schools. We looked at research and beliefs of a student-centered math class and discussed small tweaks we can make to our class to help increase engagement and achievement. These teachers are amazing!

Sometimes all a student needs is a sentence frame and the right manipulatives. This beaded rack supports thinking. The frame gives them the words to explain it. Putting sentence frames and manipulatives into stations means kids who used to stay quiet start explaining their math out loud!

Hiding the manipulatives in a cabinet? Bad move, friend. Keeping them out and accessible builds student discourse, deeper thinking, and real understanding of the math! It can be as simple as bins everyone can see and reach :)

I saw this on a school visit & it stuck with me. Teaching isn't just math or science or history, it's helping students shift their mindset. It applies to us teachers too! The way we talk to ourselves about our teaching shapes how we grow and help our students to do the same!
