Omg people aren’t automatically switching to English when I speak Portuguese?? Am I…fluent?

One porto in, and all of a sudden, I’m fluent in Portuguese (allegedly)

I honestly feel ridiculous trying to speak a language I’ve barely studied, but it’s kinda crazy to hear and feel Portuguese coming out of my mouth.

In Porto now, right outside my accommodation, trying to hype myself up for my first Portuguese conversation. Here goes nothing…

I keep repeating the word ‘gender’ in (what I think is) an Australian accent to amuse myself. Jeen-dah, jeen-dah, jeen-dah. Did I get that right?

Is it weird that I get offended whenever I see people going to the Philippines without telling me, even if I don’t know them that well or even at all? It is, isn’t it?

At a Chinese restaurant in Madrid right now, and although it was already established from the start that I was Filipino and did not speak Chinese, the owner seems to keep forgetting and keeps on speaking to me in Chinese anyway.

Going for the first time to Portugal next month, and so I’m finally gonna take on some Portuguese. Let’s see how far I get in a month knowing Spanish.

Another day, another pat in the back for a masterful use of the Spanish past subjunctive

Code-switched to corporatese at a meeting this morning, and I’m torn between feeling proud of myself and vomiting my brains out.

Spanish really said “Y’all on your own” when it dropped all the conjugations for ser and ir.

I always like to think that at some point, I must have had Malay-speaking Tagalog ancestors that were disappointed that their kids weren't learning Malay anymore, which at the time was considered a prestigious language. Don’t worry, lolo and lola, I got you.

One of my favorite things to do in Spanish is playing with word order. Like I’m just dragging the subject around because it feels right.

I liked one reel on Instagram from some telenovela, and now the algorithm thinks I love them. It is not wrong.

It’s just Jerbear, a common nickname for Jeremies (Jeremy’s?), but in Spanish 💃🏽 When I first created it on Twitter, I meant for it to be an account for me to practice my Spanish. I never actually used it though. Then I discovered langtwt and then repurposed it for just general language tomfoolery.

Today, during a meeting where some colleagues where speaking in Indonesian, I recognized one particular word that I had studied that helped me follow the conversation even though I wasn’t understanding every word. It made me really happy because it was a clear indicator that I was making progress.

Meanwhile, I had to use the following Indonesian terms: ‘percobaan,’ ‘ledakan,’ and ‘yang dimaksud’: Jepang mau lakukan percobaan untuk ngebom suatu tempat tanpa ledakan. Percobaan yang dimaksud menurut negara lain bodoh.
