I sit here enjoying a double IPA at a craft beer/coffee shop in a hutong (alley) in Beijing and man… I am a gentrification scholar who sure does love gentrified shit 😆

I know I comment on this regularly but having one's employing college, one's alma mater college, and one's scholarly society, especially when one is on the executive committee of said society, all use the same acronym makes searching one's email just absolutely dastardly. "LSA" does nothing for me.

One reason not to disdain your university’s athletics program as a faculty member is that it really helps with the end of summer blues. Yes, I am already panicking that it is the end of July. But I also just added my football tickets to my apple wallet. 🏈

Me being geniunely confused. “I dunno. Is Demnark in the G20? Sweden, perhaps?” My friend: “I don’t think that’s what they mean by superpower.”

A Sprocle opinionation quiz question which reads “name a superpower that would help world leaders solve global issues peacefully?”

I stole this currency folder idea from a blog once. Not only is it convenient, it makes me happy because it’s my promise to myself that I will go visit these cool places again. Just added a ZAR pocket.

A blue plastic coupon file. The tabs are labeled with the names of different international currencies.

Me to my students: No you can't turn that into Canvas at 12:05, the deadline was 12. Me to my editor: Here is this 6-page thing I promised you a year ago.

I will believe in the models talking over when a basic targeted advertising algorithm can figure out that I really was only in the market for *one* eight-seater dining table…

Arrive in Europe for transfer. Message from home: Public health alerts—don’t breathe the air! The vegetables are also sus. 🙃 Maybe I’ll stay in the Netherlands…

“Let me ask you a nosy-ass question” :side-eye: “No no I’m a professor. Actually for real interested.” :Face brightens: ❤️ my job sometimes.

Driving through the shacks in the townships outside Capetown (and with full acknowledgment this is an over simplification and YET) The world’s richest man is from this country and yet instead of using his money to help his country he’s using his money to ruin mine. WTF.

Globalization and language is my black South African driver who speaks South African English and Afrikaans listening to an African American English hip hop song the chorus of which is rapped in Mexican Spanish. ❤️❤️❤️

People in my fandom trashed me anonymously for taking fanfic like a literary endeavor. They thought I was putting on airs. It took me a decade to realize they just couldn’t fathom I really am this big of a nerd. Bless them; that was borderline a compliment!

If you see this, please tell me the worst/most baffling bit of creative feedback you've ever recieved. Mine is still the time somebody told me my aliens had names that were too alien. Not that they were unpronounceable, just that they didn't sound enough like human names.

One of the things that vexes me the most about my industry is academia's just utter insistence on reinventing every single wheel Like seriously, we cannot ever follow a process invented by someone else and just tweak it. I think it comes from the devaluing of replication in research.

Juneteenth Pro Tip: if it would feel weird to be at a Word Cup game and sitting while they play, say, the Ghanaian national anthem, then it should feel weird to be sitting while they’re playing Lift Every Voice and Sing.

Doing something you have been experiencing a lot of resistance to and then taking the rest of the day off is an absolutely valid academic work strategy. I just told this to one of my grad students the other day, and today I’m practicing what I preach. Now to go garden.

I like that I just noticed the date and my entire thought was, "Oh yeah I guess the president is having a birthday party or some such today. Huh. Well, my local joint is showing Netherlands vs. Japan. That's what's on."
