And I forgot to share this here! Get ready for me to talk your ears off about leaves!
R is for RED BANDED LEAFHOPPER! These colorful little guys are expert jumpers, but they also shoot their poop when threatened and produce crazy nano particles that waterproof them and diffuse light. Scientists are studying them for that reason! #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
I forgot to make a #kidlitartpostcard but I do have a letter Q! 📞: Rep’d by @liznealon.bsky.social at @greatdoglit.bsky.social 🎨: www.jessielehson.com/portfolio/ Q is for Queen! Queens are monarch mimics and their chrysalis looks the same except they are pink! #kidlit #kidlitart #ArtABCs
P is for PILLBUG! Fun fact… pillbugs are actually crustaceans and not bugs at all! But they are my kids favorite so I decided to make an exception for them! #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
O is for OWL MOTH! The giant owl moth likes to psych predators out with its owl-like wing spots. In reality it prefers to sip on lilac flowers though. #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
N is for NAIS TIGER MOTH! These little guys live in the east coast of the US. They like to hide out in curled up leaves. They emit high-frequency clicks to jam bats' navigation. Nais is a name in Greek mythology for the Naiads, or water nymphs. #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
Happy #kidlitartpostcard day! Dirt. (aka crud…) 📞: Rep’d by @liznealon.bsky.social at @greatdoglit.bsky.social 🎨: www.jessielehson.com/portfolio/ #kidlitpostcard #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration
M is for MOSS MANTIS! The sneaky moss mantis is native to Southeast Asia. It’s body is covered in green, brown, and grey spikey bits that make it a master of camouflage and a serious ambush predator. #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
The 13th was the Sabertooth Longhorn Beetle which is one of the prettiest bugs I have ever seen. They are wood tunneling larvae for most of their life so I did a version with bark beetle damage as the carapace. #junebug2026 #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #insect
Drawing with baking soda water…. 👀 #kidlit #kidlitart
L is for LICHEN CARRYING GREEN LACEWING! These friends are the larva of the lacewing which is a beneficial friend in the garden. They camouflage themselves by building gillie suits of lichen and bark (and sometimes the corpses of their enemies…) #kidlit #kidlitart #ArtABCs
Lace bugs have such pretty iridescent wings that they remind me of soap bubbles… so I made a bubble wand too. I wanted to use copper wire, but I didn’t have any so I used pipe cleaners which were janky, but they looked like shiny soapy wings! #junebug2026 #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #insect
Happy Birthday #kidlitartpostcard!! I present: me, as a child. Playing with mud and bugs, so pretty much the same except for my favorite red bathing suit. 📞: Rep’d by @liznealon.bsky.social at @greatdoglit.bsky.social 🎨: www.wineberrywoodpress.com/portfolio/ #kidlitpostcard #kidlit #kidlitart
K is for KATYDID! There are thousands and thousands of types of these little dudes, but I went with the common katydid. They are sometimes called longhorn grasshoppers because of their super long antennae. #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
J is for JUNE BUG! I had a hard time deciding between June bugs and jumping spiders for J…. until I looked at June bugs and realized there is a west coast species with the fanciest antenna I have ever seen! I am a sucker for a fancy antennae so… #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
#bugsinbloom2026 art challenge week 2: Beetles & Cosmos #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #natureillustration
Happy #kidlitartpostcard day! Ants stockpiling violet seeds. 📞: Rep’d by @liznealon.bsky.social at @greatdoglit.bsky.social 🎨: www.jessielehson.com/portfolio/ #kidlitpostcard #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration
I is for INCHWORM! I learned this week that inchworms are actually the caterpillars of the geometer moth. There are hundreds of types, but they all have the same adorable “inching” movement. That’s because their feet are all on their ends! #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
I was so excited when I stumbled across the #bugsinbloom2026 art challenge… because it combines my two absolute favorite things to draw—- bugs and plants!!! 🪲 🌱 I’m going to try and do all of them (but no promises…) Atlas moth + lantana #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #natureillustration
It’s the last day of the #OurPlanetWeek2026 illustration challenge! Today’s prompt is ‘seeds sowing’ #opw26seeds and of course I had to draw one of my favorite seed sowing friends— ants! 🐜 (More in caption ⬇️) #Ourplanetweek #Letsdrawthechange #Kidlitart #kidlit
Happy Earth Day! 🌎 🌱 To celebrate I decided to make some drawings for the #OurPlanetWeek2026 illustration challenge! Today’s prompt is ‘forests growing’ #opw26forests #ourplanetweek #letsdrawthechange #kidlit #kidlitart
H is for HUMMINGBIRD HAWK MOTH! I say it every time, but these guys are the cutest! They are like little furry flying shrimps with goofy smiles. I am forever planting things to try and entice them to my yard. #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
G is for GOLDENROD CRAB SPIDER! These little guys literally change their coloring to match the flowers they hunt on. They are floral ambush predators! #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
F is for FIREFLIES! Everyone loves a firefly (which is actually a type of beetle) but did you know that their larvae are also super cool and glow underground while hunting snails and slugs? #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
E is for EMERALD ASH BORER! These guys are kind of jerks… but they are really shiny and pretty. They have a fascinating almost hammered metallic texture and it’s not their fault that they were brought to a place where they became invasive. #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
D is for DAMSELFLIES! If you are ever feeling down google damselfly faces— these guys are the cutest. (I realize I should be on F now, but I got behind….) #kidlit #kidlitart #illustration #ABCs #ArtABCs
