I was raised an atheist. That book and "American religious history" are inescapable in standard American curriculum, I promise. If you don't understand what Texas wants is a bad idea, your entire public school 8th grade English class wasn't made to memorize and individually recite the 23rd Psalm.

This is correct. You can't understand American literature and history without some understanding of the Bible and of American religious history. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

This intersection of S King and Alaska Way S needs to get the bike route clearly marked. As a ped on the sidewalk side you get cyclists zipping by and then u-turning and zipping by again as they realize they missed the curving bike lane because of the heap of Limes + zero effective signs.

A big stretch of sidewalk blending with a bike lane. Lime bike and scooters are on the right, Port of Seattle cranes are in the back, and some maple trees are on the left. The sky is nice whispy clouds.

I was given a single medium-sized zucchini via my building's P-patch gardener network. I turned it into a pan of muffins and two loaves of zucchini bread, leading me to think one zucchini plant per 25 households is about right.

Holy shit, finally timed my visit to The Pastry Project for a crème brûlée croissant. Seattle people: highly recommend you go get one. I believe they're Fri/Sat mornings only. Walk or bike em over to Habitat Beach for a waterfront breakfast and you are living life right.

A circular ring of croissant dough filled with burnt sugar and custard. It's on a bamboo cutting board and black granite countertop.

That one thunderstorm began less than 2 minutes after I walked out to run some errands. Mom let me play in the crick during them as a kid and I am a happy idiot when they happen here, I think "go indoors!" and then don't.

Just that one thunderstorm this morning thru 11 a.m. in #Seattle has dropped July 2026 from a tie for the driest July on record to 22nd driest so far. 😂 More rain on the way today.

Counterpoint to the Seattle Times: Doy. Approve the library levy, it benefits every single person here in both immediate and long-term ways. Among other things, you can read and comment on ST stories by logging in via your library card.

My balcony overlooks Seattle's US-Belgium pedestrian zone and so far I've seen a Paul Revere hat + flag cape guy on a Lime bike, a half man-half eagle, and a teen who turned himself into a flag. Three attempts at a chant have failed entirely thus far. It's perfect, by which I mean ridiculous.

The Belgium-Senegal crowd is off to a far chiller start than Bosnia-Herzegovina or the Socceroos, but I'll delay my full evaluation of pedestrian zone joy for another hour. Iran-Egypt defies ranking, my block had some anger and weirdness amid the excitement.

This November, we have the chance to fix this in WA state. A billionaire GOP donor has bankrolled a trans sports ban initiative that will be on our Nov ballots. We see what’s at stake with this federal ruling and we can’t allow this in WA.

See, people always want to make this just about "sports," but the real upshot here is that, 6-3, trans women can't make a claim under the Equal Protection Clause. And if they can't do that, it's hard to see how they have constitutional rights.

It's pub week for The Cruelty of Nice Folks! I started off writing a book about the death of George Floyd and the treatment of black life in Minneapolis. It took five years to bring this book into the world, and I never knew where it would take me. Let's talk about it:

First move in 17 years, did not mean to move to the pedestrian-only zone amid World Cup, Juneteenth and Father's Day but here we are. Scheduled everything so carefully, but have learned that Shaq is DJing a block party I didn't know about. There's chaos mode and then there's whatever this is.
