I really hope people support END OF OAK STREET in theaters, it’s exactly the type of mid budget, original studio movie that’s rarely made anymore. And it’s great! People always seem to be decrying originality in Hollywood but seldom support it when it happens and my screening was largely empty.

Getting really tired of Indiewire excusing garbage AI “Look, this promo is pretty benign. This isn’t even a real “podcast” in which these AI dogs prattle on for an hour about the movie. It’s a 90-second ad, and frankly there are more important things to get angry about online than this.”

I really hope that all of the people in my feeds who rail against gen-AI flyer art (and rightfully so) and are also horror fans, don’t fall prey to Ice Cream Man now that the reviews are pointing to its abundance of AI effects. Don’t be a contradiction, speak with your wallets here.
Can we collectively stop referring to all of the disc formats as “dvd”? Blu-ray has been around for two decades now, it’s the default format. UHD the even better format. The landscape for physical media is consistently confusing for newcomers and using outdated formats globally isn’t helping.

A real bummer that chains are getting behind a movie like ICE CREAM MAN enough to spring it on people buying tickets to a secret movie. I didn’t go tonight, because this is what I expected it was, and I’m still disappointed by the decision. And even more so by people excited to see it. Do better!
Nothing against the MCU stans, and I will be seeing the movie myself, but Spider-Man occupying 68 showtimes tomorrow at one of our local AMCs (many not even remotely close to full) is the a prime example of the peril of studio saturation at the multiplex level. There. Are. Other. Movies. To. Show.
I have my own personal/professional issues with Alamo that anyone who has followed me knows about by now but removing them from the equation, this Cinerama Dome news is still bad. Being upset about Paramount buying WB and not this, is weird. Movie studios should not own theaters, even one screens.

Sam Neill gets due love for Jurassic Park but his performance in Event Horizon made such an impression on me as a kid (I saw it in a theater when I was 11) that I still hold it in the highest regard. People like to boast that they can do things with their eyes closed, and he did that here. RIP

BODY SNATCHERS was the first Abel movie I saw, back when it came out as a sci-fi obsessed kid. It would be years before I saw more of his work but it became a very foundational, somewhat terrifying, movie for me as a budding cinephile. I produced this new 4K disc, with Abel, which is kinda surreal

Wild that in the span of one week Sony has made it clear that they will remove digital movies people purchased from their accounts due to licensing issues (no surprise there) and will also cease making physical discs for first party PlayStation games in 2028.

I usually only post about movies but I’m a casual sports fan and these past few Knicks games have been more emotionally investing, turbulent and hopeful than anything in cinema this year. What a team, what a story. Wish I was in NY right now.
I loved DISCLOSURE DAY while watching it but after sitting with it for a couple days, it’s clear to me that it is Spielberg’s vulgar auteurism movie. It is to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS what UNSTOPPABLE was to CRIMSON TIDE for Tony Scott. As much informed by what came prior as laying waste to it.
Two very good movies in wide release this weekend: THE FURIOUS and DISCLOSURE DAY — both genre exercises that are technically assured but otherwise couldn’t be more different. And both of my screenings were mostly full, love to see it.
It’s my fault for putting anyone in this industry on a pedestal but I really didn’t think Marty would cave to AI. And anyone saying it’s “just storyboards” is ignorant of the historically human aspect of that process and how beautiful it can be. After all, Marty illustrated his own for years.
