Cardinals announced the Nootbaar deal for Eagen, Santana and a PTBNL. 40-man reduces to 38, and they are one light on the active roster for the time being.
Cardinals recalled Hunter Dobbins. He'll take the active spot which was May's, and they'll have to open another active spot when Ferguson arrives.
Teams announced the Ferguson deal. 40-man back to 39 (for the moment, until Nootbaar is announced).

Brewers/Cardinals trade has been announced by Milwaukee. Cardinals 40-man reduces to 38 (momentarily) with a vacant spot on the active roster.
Instant reaction at Words About Birds -- the Cardinals spun two rentals into intermediate- and long-range thump that provides significant outfield depth and eye-popping stat lines, making their first Brewers trade in a decade likely worth the risk.
May and Romero trade to Milwaukee, per @ken-rosenthal.bsky.social, is the first trade between the Cardinals and Brewers in more than ten years. Last was Jonathan Broxton for Malik Collymore at the 2015 deadline.
Cardinals have a lineup submitted for tonight that includes all of Burleson, Nootbaar, Herrera, Crooks. Plus six other guys!
It is indeed Michael McGreevy starting for the Cardinals tonight. All TBA after that.
One notable pattern in Bloom’s trades so far: when the Cardinals have eaten money, they have taken on immediate roster help to mitigate cost and fill spots cheaper. When money hasn’t been a real variable (ie. Donovan) they have gone longer range. Could matter re: May.
Trimming out (or downgrading) one of these pieces feels about right for Dustin May.

I know that my perspective is skewed because when I see him play in person he’s Ted Williams, but I don’t think “the Dodgers got these pieces for Michael Busch!” is, like, a dunk. Busch has been worth almost nine WAR in not quite three seasons. His path is better than Eric Karros’. He’s very good!
Haven’t seen a lot of people say “Tarik Skubal had experimental and unprecedented elbow surgery less than three months ago” out loud, so I’ve decided to be the guy in that discourse niche.
I suppose you would have to describe Quinn Mathews’ big league debut as “perfectly adequate.”

While I was seeing Hadestown, the Cardinals optioned Matt Svanson and designated Tink Hence for assignment to make roster room for Quinn Mathews.
You’d have to think that when Buster Posey agreed to return to the Giants with visions of becoming a conquering hero who brought the franchise back from the abyss, he did not have the phrase “scooter accident press release” in mind.
