It stood a little ways down the street and where a door should have been was instead a blank expanse of white lap siding, the same that made up the rest of the house. The yard was nondescript and frayed: patchy yellow grass, and pink gravel beneath the windows. Inside the house lived a man who never left.

Since she’d come up from Issetibbeha County to Jackson looking for work, she’d been through a couple of men—well, more than a couple, really. She hadn’t found a marriageable one in the bunch and when she took on Shuggy, she hadn’t been kidding herself about him. She was just marking time with him.
