Some people call for the ouster of horrible unethical political candidates because they fear that they might win. Others only do so when it becomes clear that they might lose.

What happened in the Capital Region yesterday and into the night was not a tropical storm. It was just a slow-moving system that parked itself over us. Our storm total here in Albany was almost 7 inches of rain; we'll get a little bit more today.
Worth digging into the full results of the most recent CNN poll. My takeaways: there's still a solid MAGA core of around a third, though some dislike some of Trump's actions. And it says something about how he's covered that 43% think he has the stamina and sharpness to serve as president.

The Dems did the right thing in getting rid of Platner. Now it is the Ohio Republican Party's turn. Reminder: no one has a right to serve in an elected office, and proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt is necessary before imposing criminal penalties.
Domestic Abuse Allegations Rock Max Miller’s Ohio House Race
Representative Max Miller, a Republican, is facing accusations of abuse from his ex-wife in a bitter family feud that might put his otherwise safe seat in play.

Spending some time wrestling with how to word a letter or email delivering bad news makes you a better manager and a better person, and sharing that communication for feedback makes your interlocutors better and more empathetic people as well. I will die on this hill.
OMG huge numbers of people are going to be doing this for every difficult email delivering bad news that they have to write.
Fucking hell as if receiving automated rejection letters for jobs wasn't bad enough.
As Don suggests, this could involve two versions, with the first focused specifically on midterm promises that a Democratic Congress can accomplish, and then a bigger vision for a positive future under Democratic leadership.
I do find it amazing that even in this moment, the Dems can't come up with some sort of "Contract for America" like language that offers an alternative to Trump. Maybe they have it, but whatever governing vision they have is lost in the noise.
If you would like to reach your daily quota of yikes early, this ought to do it.
“A panel of advisers to the Food and Drug Administration, several of them sellers of experimental peptides, dismissed the concerns of the agency’s scientists on Thursday, voting in favor of allowing broad production of poorly understood peptide treatments.” @jackiantonovich.bsky.social
We love war movies. Why hasn't there been a full Hollywood feature movie about Henry Johnson? Ideally one that includes his decision to let loose on the US Army's racism in a public speech after his return to the US.
Us: We want more original stories with unknown actors. Movie execs: Here is A Christmas Carol starring Johnny Depp.
Nothing more pathetic than a fledgling finch sitting on our deck railing begging the parents to pay attention while they eat at the feeder. At one point, the fledgling flew up and perched on top of the feeder to scold the parents directly for failing to care for their poor little baby.

My main reax is annoyance that people don't know this same shit has been going down since DURING Watergate. Like if people didn't know who chopped down the cherry tree. The t-shirts wingnut trolls would sport, "Nixon '88: Tanned, Rested, and Ready" shirts. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The Trump admin's latest strategy to mass generate removal orders is diabolical: - Take a huge group of people with hearings scheduled in late 2026, 2027, or 2028. - Send them a physical letter rescheduling all of their cases to next week. - Those who inevitably miss court get ordered deported.
Deportation Orders Soar in NYC as Trump 'Mega Master' Hearings Accelerate
A new report finds removal orders for people who missed hearings more than doubled in New York City in June, as a new tactic of hastily scheduled court dates rolled out.

If you are interested in learning more about boreal fires and the climate change connection, I recommend John Vaillant's Fire Weather. It tells the story of the 2016 fire that devastated Fort McMurray in Alberta and links it to the history of fossil fuel production and climate change.

The anatomy of an AI-supported academic article is becoming more apparent. I desk reviewed ~70 manuscripts this week for our journal. Reckon 20ish had significant AI assistance. On top of hundreds of others recently I'm starting to see patterns. Are other editors are seeing the same or similar? 1/

Adding fish to rice paddies fights a horrible parasitic disease. In a schistosomiasis hotspot in Senegal, researchers stocked rice fields with two native species, African bonytongue and Nile tilapia, that eat or outcompete the freshwater snails carrying the parasite buff.ly/pLZVsmD #ShareGoodNewsToo

The testosterone-testing policy may well be performative posturing, but the talk around it, combined with other things, is genuinely dangerous. Clear signals are issuing that some inappropriate and illegal behaviors will be celebrated rather than punished as exemplifying manliness.
