Roaming around the West End

I booked off portions of today from work to run a few bike related errands. The main thing was to do the next stage in getting a rear brake put back on the Haul a Day. The last post showed the mounting bolt extraction. I went over to Bikechain, our campus DIY bike shop. The good folks there let me use an M6 tap to clean out the threads on the bike mounts.

Cyclon 2026 Day 3

As predicted, the weather was bad today, and so all bike rides were cancelled. Given this fact, I decided somewhat regretfully that I would take the GO train back to Toronto at midday today and cut my time at Cyclon short. It was pouring rain during breakfast, but then there was a brief break so I went out for a short ride.

Bag mount for the Neo 9s

One of the nicest things about a Brompton is the luggage block that mounts a variety of bags onto the front of the frame. Several vendors are now making accessories for the Neo series of folding bikes, and so I got a front mount that was advertised as specifically for the Neo 9. Here's what was in the box. The things to note are a plastic shim that has a curved surface that matches the outer diamter of the headtube, a luggage mount with an elevated position, and an accessory strap to make it easier to actuate the latch that fixes the bag in place.

Tweaking my PDW fenders

After P2A, I reinstalled my metal fenders from Portland Design Works. However, there has been an ongoing issue with these fenders: the struts are a bit too short, in particular the strut that is pointed towards the rear. Biidaasige Park expansion

The portion of Biidaasige Park west of Cherry Street opened this weekend. Had to go check it out. It was great to see plenty of people walking and biking about to check it out. Here is a view of the waterfront from a different perspective that what was previously available. Wetland areas are incorporated as well. There are a couple of colorful metal sculptures that you can use to frame those instagram picrtures.

Haul a Day brake replacement: step 1

I've been riding my Bike Friday Haul a Day cargo bike around without a functioning rear brake for about two years now. OK for carting the dog around the neighbourhood, but not a good practice in general. The issue is that I've been bad about checking the rear brake for corrosion since it is concealed by my saddle bags, and the bolts that mount the brake disc caliper to the frame were both seized and the allen heads were stripped.

Loop around the airport with TBN

Today I joined an Urban Roller ride with TBN. The route took us from Kipling TTC station up around the airport, and back home. The start point was the north parking lot of Kipling station. Ride leader Albert reminds us to follow the rules of the road. Since this is an Urban Roller ride, we will also have a sweep, as well as regrouping to keep everyone together.

Brian Armstrong Ghost Bike

Someone said that I should check the condition of the ghost bike in High Park installed in memory of Brian Armstrong. When I went by to check on it, it was still in pretty good shape. I did note some changes since it was installed, including this nice new signage. I added a few fresher plastic flowers. Someone also painted two birds on the handlebars.

The Simcoe County Loop Trail with TBN

Today was a one day ride of the Simcoe County Loop Trail organized by TBN. I did this loop back in 2020 on my own, and I was looking forward to riding it with others this time. The designated start point was the "Barrie" sign in Heritage Park. Unfortunately, this group photo didn't include about four or five riders that rode up after the picture was taken.

World Recumbent Bike Day

There was a call a while back to designate July 7 as World Recumbent Bike Day. This would commemorate the day (July 7, 1933) when a professional French cyclist named Francis Faure rode a recumbent bicycle (designed by Charles Mochet) to beat the world hour record. Of course, shortly after that event, the UCI revised the definition of a bicycle in order to exclude recumbents.

Ghost bike for Sinhue Garcia

A cyclist was killed in a hit and run collision in Niagara on the Lake on June 26. He was subsequently identified as Sinhue Garcia, a migrant farmworker from Mexico who worked in the area. This article highlights the fact that there have been a whole series of deaths involving other migrant farmworkers who were cycling or walking along the roads in the area.

a few things seen by the lake

On a short morning ride this AM out and back to the Jim Tovey Lakefront Conservation Area, I noted a few things. Firstly, on Ellis at Lakeshore, there is a bike sensor pointed at the north west corner. At least on weekends, if the light for Lakeshore westbound turns red, the eastbound light also turns red and you can cross all the way.

Canada Day is a scorcher

As everyone knows, we're in a serious heat wave, with high temps well above 30°C in Toronto for the next few days. No real relief until Sunday. Toeday would have been a good day to get out for a ride early, but I'm not really a morning person. I concede that a day like today is too warm for even a lightweight wool jersey, so I wore something more appropriate for the holiday.

East Don Trail

I decided to check out the East Don Trail today. Rob Zaichkowski has already written about it extensively, so I wanted to check it out for myself. Starting at the entrance to the new trail which is just past the junction of the Lower Don River and the Taylor Creek Trails, after 0.5 km you pass under the Don Valley Parkway.

Nine Creeks Trail and Crossing the Credit River

There have been a number of posts on social media showing that the new pedestrian and cycling path associated with the renovation of the QEW bridge crossing the Credit River was complete. I decided to check it out today. My route took me across the QEW at Odgen Ave, and that is where I started taking pictures. The bridge has been completed since the last time I rode across, although I will note that there is a lack of a curb cut at either end.

TNTO 2026 with TBN

TNTO is the annual ride to Niagara Falls and back, with an overnight stay at the falls. I've done this a couple of times, with the route that starts at Stoney Creek. This means about 100 km each day. The serious people ride all the way from Toronto and back the next day. Here we are with the luggage van at Stoney Creek.

GRX rear shifter shreds cables

The shifting on the rear of the Naked was getting steadily worse over the past month, so it was time to check if I needed to change the cable. Looking at the internet, I see plenty of examples of the GRX brifter shredding cables. (this as an example) I don't like working on my brifters so I went over to Geoffrey's.

Humber Bay Park East

Humber Bay Park East has been closed for many years. Today the fence that blocked the main roadway to the park was partially open, and I saw many people walking around the area. Here is a picture from the easternmost point, looking back west at what was the beach area. The shoreline here is a combination of armor stone, as well as fist sized rocks covering what used to be the beach.
