This week's Re:View from @alwalker.bsky.social has us all feeling like Captain Haddock. A huge week for Re:State. Have a great weekend everyone!

The Re:View is out! This week, Senior Researcher, Alex Walker (@alwalker.bsky.social), argues that No 10 North must be more than just a regional outpost of Whitehall. Instead, it should be an engine for devolution and regional growth. Read Alex's Re:View here: open.substack.com/pub/restate/...

Whitehall has a people problem Talent is not taken seriously enough; the Civil Service is bad at deploying & rewarding it. It's also very bad at dealing with poor performers (a source of deep source of frustration for talented officials) Whitehall needs to fix it's talent problem 🧵

No10 North could be great for changing how power works in Westminster, but the rest of the machinery of government changes yesterday feel like just another rebranding exercise. Where's the real plan for reform? Great to read @charliepickles.bsky.social on this in The Times this morning.

Always fun to speak to James on the YIMBY Pod, this time talking about better regulation and mine and @coryberman.bsky.social's paper 'The law of rule' for @re-state.bsky.social

New YIMBY Pod! - Should the British government start an open source AI lab? - And why is Britain's regulatory system a total mess? We speak to @jo3hill.bsky.social, who tells us why, and how to fix it! Listen/subscribe here or wherever you get your pods! www.abundancepod.com/p/how-britai...

The mess of regulators with overlapping jurisdictions, and the challenges of getting them to coordinate, were key findings from the Fingleton Review on nuclear. Today, we’re digging into the ways this happens, and how to disentangle them. Great paper by @coryberman.bsky.social

📢 NEW REPORT 📢 Britain has too many regulators. Today, Re:State publishes Over ruled: why Britain has too many regulators and what to do about it. 📜 Read the full report here: re-state.co.uk/publications...

Great to speak to the FT about how important it is that Andy Burnham prepares by picking a team for the transition, and making it clear who the ministers will be

The Re:View is out! This week, @stkaye.bsky.social asks whether devolution alone can remake the State, or whether Whitehall must be reformed first. Read Simon's take on why the future of devolution depends on the future of the Civil Service: open.substack.com/pub/restate/...

The Re:View 3 July 2026

It’s the end of another busy week in the policy world, and in case you hadn’t heard, there really is a new Prime Minister on the way. He will bring with him fresh

👀 With Andy Burnham returning to Westminster, attention is turning to his potential policy agenda. If devolution is front and centre, will he make plans for its missing ingredient: fiscal firepower? 💷 In case you missed it, our new report sets out a radical new approach to tax decentralisation 👇

Re:State@re-state.bsky.social · 2mo ago

📢 NEW REPORT📢 🧩 Fiscal devolution is the missing piece of England's devolution agenda. Without genuine fiscal firepower behind it, there is no "devolution revolution". ✈️ In "Taxing for take-off", we set out our blueprint for an ambitious decentralisation of tax power 👇

One of the best parts of my job is that I get to talk to civil servants about working in government. But that doesn’t scale very well so we created a survey. If you’re currently a civil servant, fill out our anonymous Alternative People Survey. Last year we had 1,265 responses!

Re:State@re-state.bsky.social · 2mo ago

Calling all civil servants📣 Read @jo3hill.bsky.social's latest Re:Think on why the Alternative People Survey matters, then take 10 minutes to share your views. 📖 restate.substack.com/p/launching-... 📋 survey.alchemer.eu/s3/91132417/...

So excited to launch the Alternative People Survey 2026! Civil servants are an under-surveyed bunch. What do they think? In our first survey last year 1,265 told us. This year we’re doing it again - with new questions about AI, payouts, and more.

Re:State@re-state.bsky.social · 2mo ago

Civil servants – tell us what you think. Our Alternative People Survey 2026 launches today - and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. Read more about it and find out how to take part in @jo3hill.bsky.social's op-ed for @civilserviceworld.bsky.social: www.civilserviceworld.com/news/article...
