Andy Burnham will fail. The driver of populist revolt (I call it postfascism - see my article in CPT) is socio-economic dislocation. He shows no sign he'll tackle accelerating inequality & the increased poverty it creates. The slide to postfascism (or even worse) continues.

Trump's purpose was to protect the wealth & power of the neoliberal order in an age of populist anger. A Wes Streeting premiership turns the 50/50 prospect of a majority Reform government at the next GE into a certainty. Those who say Labour would have to be tin-eared to go down that road forget that destroying the Left of their own party means more to them even than power.

Whether an anti-Reform coalition emerges is down to Labour. If they remember who they are & return to their values, anything is possible. If they stick with repackaged Blairism, they can forget it. Progressive parties won't work with a party that's lost its soul.

Who knew that trying to govern without a principle in sight by a bunch of dead-behind-the-eyes drones would blow up in Labour's face? Simply saying "we're not the Tories" might work when the Tories are self-immolating at an election but is a pretty shit way to actually govern.

Of course, we shouldn't discount the possibility that the Thai crypto-billionaires funding Reform UK are genuinely interested in addressing grinding poverty & despair in Britain. But those nagging doubts that they couldn't give a rat's arse about working people just won't go away.
