May 31, 2005: As Sen. Don Harmon presented the BIMP, Sen. Dave Sullivan criticized sweeping several funds, saying he wished his children were Democrats so they'd sweep his kitchen as thoroughly as the funds. Sen. Harmon replied that if the Sullivan children weren't Democrats, they'd work on them.

STATE OF ILLINOIS

REGULAR SESSION
SENATE TRANSCRIPT
54th Legislative Day
5/31/2005
SENATOR D. SULLIVAN:
Let's just assume a it's been about half hour that this motion has been over in the Senate. It's about eight o'clock at night. Most people aren't paying attention to what we're doing here, but we're trying to pay attention. You mentioned that this is a hundred-and-fifty-six-million-dollar we'll call it sweep, you can call it whatever you want. That, I think, is about five million dollars a minute that we're sweeping right out of here. It almost makes me wish that my children were Democrats so they could learn to sweep the kitchen floor as well as you are sweeping funds right out of here.
SENATOR HARMON:
Senator Sullivan, I think your children are Democrats and if they're not, we'll work on them.

this is it sweet babes it all comes down to today get out there and fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds worth of distance run onward onward to victory in glory unless your ideas are bad in which case go back to bed

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR WATSON)
Further discussion? Senator Roskam, you wish to close?
SENATOR ROSKAM:
It's tough to beat that close. I'll defer to Senator Cullerton's close.

Speaker Madigan:
"Yeah, right, right. And the beans."

May 27, 1981: Anticipating a war between Chicago and the rest of the state, the House adopted a resolution appointing former Rep. Ronald Greisheimer as Field Marshall of suburban/downstate forces, who gave a speech denouncing Czar Michaeloffski Roykovich and the Radical Terrorist Anarchists (RTA.)

TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE

May 27, 1981

Doorkeeper: "Mr. Speaker, the Honorable Field Marshal, Ronald Griesheimer, former Representative and his Party wishes to be admitted to this chamber."

Speaker Davis: "Thank you, Mr. Doorkeeper. The Chair recognizes Lieutenant Commander Reed in charge of honors and morale for the Defense Corps."

Reed: "Mr. Speaker,..."

Speaker Davis: "Hit the music, Betty. Right-hand salute,
Commander Wolf, pipe the Field Marshal. Left-hand salute. Welcome aboard, left-hand salute.. aboard the bridge. Field Marshal Griesheimer."

Griesheimer: "Thank you, Admiral. Mr. Speaker, fellow.Americans, a great American in December 23, 19...1776, said, "These are the times that try men's souls.! The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot willin this crisis shrink from the service of his country. But he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of men and women, especially if the men and women are from downstate and suburban Cook County. I come before you today asking you to come to arms to preserve the union of Illinois. A fearsome, I may add, fearsome anarchist by the name of Czar Michaeloffski Roykovich has championed a dogma. of city secession through the new rebel group known as, and mark this, mark this well, the Radical Terrorist Anarchists; also known as the RTA. Czar Royko has insulted and held up to scorn each and every good suburbanite and downstate Legislator... Ladies and Gentlemen, I stand before you today and plead with you, give us freedom from RTA or give us death.. I salute you all."

May 26, 1978: A joint session convened for an address by President Jimmy Carter, who dispensed with his prepared remarks and spoke on a few issues foreign and domestic before taking questions from members of the General Assembly on labor law, inflation, the US-Israel relationship, and urban renewal.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY
STATE OF ILLINOIS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
May 26, 1978
President Carter:
This morning I I had prepared a speech text, which has been distributed, or will be, to you. I prepared it myself and I think perhaps you might want to read it over. But I thought, in order to have a more constructive Session for me, that I would make a very few impromptu remarks and then spend what time we have together answering your questions. And just to be sure we are completely fair, I'll ask the Speaker to recognize you for questions a little bit later on. I've been a Member of a State Legislature, my first elective office was to the Georgia State Senate, where I served two terms. And I came to realize then the extreme importance of state government, the difficulties of public service, the courage required to make decisions on controversial issues; because almost every issue that comes here is difficult to resolve. If a matter is easy it's solved in a family's home, or perhaps in a neighborhood, or city hall, or county courthouse. If it's much more difficult, it comes to your desk and eventually comes to the attention of the Congress of the United States and the President.

May 20, 1981: Sens. Mark Rhoads and Terry Bruce took issue with a Mike Royko column decrying Downstate members opposed to Chicago area transit funding as bumpkins, louts, and village idiots.

82nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY
REGULAR SESSION
MAY 20, 1981
SENATOR RHOADS:
I wanted to explain that I had requested that the Mike Royko column be distributed on each Senator's desk. Speaking on behalf of the pig farmers from the suburbs, I...I just thought everybody ought to be aware of the Sun Times attitude toward anyone out-side of the City of Chicago.
PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR SAVICKAS)
Senator Bruce, do you want to answer that? Senator Bruce.
SENATOR BRUCE:
I...I'm sorry, but I...I think the proper reference, we are called yahoos, small town bumpkins, and simple-minded rustics who make up most of the rest of Illinois. I don't know whether maybe...there's also the use of hillbillies and other things, but I... I don't see anything about pig farmers, but I'll read it more closely. But I think it's small town bumpkins, simple-minded rustics, yahoos and hillbillies, pretty well covers the field.
PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR SAVICKAS)
Senator Sommer.
SENATOR SOMMER:
Senator Bruce has forgotten about the small town louts, hill-billies, and village idiots.
PRESIDING OFFICER:
(SENATOR SAVICKAS)
Well, it's a very descriptive article.
Senator Geo-Karis.
SENATOR GEO-KARIS:

Speaker Ryan: "Representative Giorgi."

to remind ourselves that we're not monarchs, or we're not kings, or we're not annointed. We're elected to this House. And when a Member of this House presents this Body here, he is present. He is entitled to whatever else of us are entitled. I think only an idiot would make the remarks that the Najority Leader made."
Speaker Ryan: "Representative Braun. Put Representative Braun on the Roll Call as present. Representative Collins."
Collins: "Well, Mr. Speaker, I would just remind the Gentleman from Winnebago that it takes one to know one, and beyond that, the devil that asked for this verification is not on this side of the aisle."
