Is Secession the Answer?
Rochelle Gurstein is the author of The Repeal of Reticence: America’s Cultural and Legal Struggles Over Free Speech, Obscenity, Sexual Liberation, and Modern Art (1996). In that book, she argued that American culture has shifted from the 19th-century ideal of privacy to one of personal exposure. Gurstein, a student of the late Christopher Lasch and a former New Republic columnist, believes this shift has stripped public life of dignity and taste. In a recent essay in the journal Salmagundi, Gurstein turns her attention to contemporary politics. She suggests that “secession,” far from being a fringe idea, might be the only option for a nation whose Constitutional order is beyond repair.
