PJM's new plan to curb rising costs from data centers being built in its 13-state territory? Basically, to force states and utilities to set up regimes for data centers to either secure their own power supplies, or get cut off during grid emergencies: www.canarymedia.com/articles/dat... #energysky

PJM’s big new data center plan: Make the states figure it out

Grid operator PJM wants states and utilities to hold data centers responsible for buying their own power — or risk being cut off from grid service.

1/3 Data center-driven capacity costs - which all customers absorb - total almost $30 billion in PJM in last 2 years. Data centers can be leveraged as part of a urgently-needed policy reforms described here. But this macro-level view ignores the local impacts of data centers.

Utilities’ guaranteed-return regulatory model drives rising bills. Fix incentives via competitive markets, storage, and TOTEX ratemaking instead of letting utilities regain monopoly control over new generation. Data Centers are an opportunity to force major changes in how Utilities run.

Another terrible idea from a longtime foe of public lands, conservation, and environmental protection. Unconstitutional under A1 S27 and state Supreme Court ruling that state government is a trustee, not a proprietor, of the public lands. Of course, that ruling has also been ignored for years.

An error in this piece. The state park/forest leasing moratorium (which I drafted as DCNR Secretary) was first put in place by Gov. Ed Rendell, was rescinded by Gov. Tom Corbett, was reinstated by Gov. Tom Wolf, and has been maintained under Gov. Shapiro.

Meta fights order to disclose job, power figures for $50B Louisiana data center

Meta’s data center has become a potent test case for public trust in the regulatory process underlying how massive energy projects are built.

There is no evidence that Shell's multibillion-dollar petrochemicals plant has boosted Beaver County's economic growth when compared to surrounding communities. In fact, federal data show that Beaver County’s GDP declined at a steeper rate than neighboring counties in southwestern Pennsylvania.
