Back from spending a week at Boys Town, Nebraska. My current book project uses a murder in World War II Mississippi to talk about crime, juvenile delinquency, and Father Flanagan's crusade for juvenile justice. One part true crime, one part social reform narrative, one part death house drama.

This, and the fact that--as early as World War I--the US was promised a future of casualty-free warfare (from the US side, of course) in which war injury is the exception and not--as has been the case throughout history--the inescapable norm.

The problem isn’t that two aircraft were shot down. The problem is that we aren’t psychologically or politically prepared to suffer any losses, because this entire war has been sold as a video game set on “easy” and not as a cause worth sacrifice.

What we are seeing in Iran is the product of a decades-long project to remove US casaulties from the calculus of American warfare. Step 1 : remove, as much as possible, US bodies from the field of fire, replacing them with machines.
