I’m often dismayed that so many Gen Z look at the Seventies and see only Queen, Abba and Fleetwood Mac. Bowie maybe. But I sense more interesting changes in taste among my generation: Kinks > Stones; Raincoats > Siouxsie; Wire > Clash. And there’ll always be love for the Beatles and the Velvets.

The singles are brilliant up until I Can See For Miles and Who Sell Out is their best album. Tommy is a lot of tosh, as is Quadrophenia. Who’s Next is listenable for the most part - Baba O’Riley is brilliant - but I cannot abide the rhythm section - like two 14 year olds in the school classroom.

At various times over the years, if I was asked who was my favourite band, I might have said the Rolling Stones. I will probably say the Rolling Stones again one day. In many ways they epitomise rock & roll. But I haven’t listened to them for absolutely ages and have no intention of doing so either.
