The internet peaked with Web 2.0. Oh, what it could have been. Here’s a fascinating glimpse at the web as it was nearly twenty years ago. (Mac Life magazine, July 2007).

I shared last week how I pair short primary source excerpts from American Yawp Reading & others with short secondary sources from places like We're History or @jstordaily.bsky.social Several peeps asked for my pairings, so I've added pairings from 1st & 2nd half U.S. history to my website 🗃️ #sschat

I had very low expectations for Hamnet going it. I love actual Shakespeare when performed, but I *loathed* Shakespeare in Love, for instance. Another movie about Will’s inspirations? 🙄 I went in not even watching the trailer. I was wrong. I was emotionally wrecked by the movie a good week. #HATM

An important piece by @jimdowns.bsky.social on public history, responding to the recent wrong-headed New Republic piece about it Thank you, Jim, for discussing what good public history does--& what historians like you & me & Kevin Kruse & Heather Cox Richardson do, & why lithub.com/on-the-publi...
On the Public Historians Reminding Us How Easy It Is to Repeat the Mistakes of the Past
A recent essay in The New Republic asks why historians have become such visible public voices during the Trump era. Katherine Kelaidis argues that figures such as Heather Cox Richardson, Jill Lepor…

I’m a very normal person, just reading old cow literature on a Thursday morning in July. Excerpts from “The Cow” by Jared Van Wagenen, published by The Macmillan Company in 1922. (Source: Library of Congress) #history #skystorians #writing
LOL. This is crazy. But the kind of crazy that I like. Follow along if you haven’t been, folks. 👇
All right, here goes: in preparation for a book I'm writing, I'm going to try something very ambitious/stupid. I am going to attempt to watch every single American movie produced in the 1980s. In chronological order of release. And to talk about them here in the process.
In July 2016, the first videos of historians sharing their perspectives on a possible Trump presidency were uploaded to a FB page called “Historians on Donald Trump,” created after a chat between the late David McCullough & Ken Burns. I revisited them: jonathanburdick.beehiiv.com/p/historians...
Historians on Donald Trump in 2016
A decade ago, organized by historian David McCullough and filmmaker Ken Burns, historians sounded the alarm on a potential Donald Trump presidency in videos posted to Facebook. Today, these videos are...

My latest is about Edwin Garnet Riley. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette called him the “poet-historian” of Pennsylvania’s Oil Region. “I have seen men rise to affluence and office and then be reduced to abject poverty over night,” he said. #history #skystorians #writing www.eriereader.com/article/edwi...

On this day in 1863, Waterford and Erie’s Col. Strong Vincent was shot during the defense of Little Round Top during the #CivilWar. The 26-year-old Vincent, who before the war practiced law in #EriePA, had told his men, “Don’t give an inch!” #history #skystorians
Snapped these of the floating community on Horseshoe Pond at Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA. Houseboats here date back to the 1890s. These 24 are grandfathered in. I’ve always been fascinated by them (and it’s actually the setting of a novel that I’ve outlined). #writing #writingcommunity

I had an aunt (my great-grandfather’s sister) who lived to 109. She was born in 1892 and died in 2002. Up until her final weeks, she remained pretty with it and aware. The older that I get, the more it blows my mind. I just think about everything she lived through and saw. #skystorians #history
