This week's writing is going pretty much as usual. Yesterday I struggled all day with a paragraph on p.5, so in order to smash that hold-up today I decided to carefully refine the previous pages in the hope of building up momentum. Instead I have now spent 4 hours stuck on a new issue I found on p.3

Do think about coming/organising! Perhaps what the conference needs is a strong panel on 'methods'? Either way, would be good to see lots of theorists turning up & reminding management just what a hotbed of humanistic excellence Exeter continues to be. The staff there deserve ribbons not scissors...
The deadline for submissions to our annual conference (this time in lovely Exeter) has been extended to July 31st. Full details 👇

Last talk/bake/photo of the year for Bristol' pol-philosophers yesterday. Very happy to say that, because we hosted good friend & marvellous collaborator @sania-ismailee.bsky.social, we went out on a high, which is more than many Prime Ministers & football teams manage. See you all soon!

I am very happy to say that @jesuscollegecam.bsky.social has a friendly fox, as seen at 4-30am, long before the heat or the students could interfere with its scavenging. Just wish I'd had a telephoto with me @wiglet1981.bsky.social.
I do like these early days of the World Cup, with everyone included and still full of hope. Right now everyone is smiling and has a chance of success! Rather like that precious time window you get before the short-listing for a political theory job. Soon, sadly, reality will reassert itself.
Very happy to promote this public philosophy collaboration by my newish & most excellent colleague Ana Milioni (who is not on social media!): www.the-pamphlet.com Also of interest 2 e.g @rebeccabuxton.bsky.social @wiglet1981.bsky.social @tmbejan.bsky.social @enzoreds.bsky.social @jowolff.bsky.social

Tewkesbury Abbey enjoying the sunset. Just around the bend, a few cygnets enjoy their first paddle. How could anyone ever think of them as ugly ducklings?
Lovely to get a signed copy of this excellent book handed to me earlier in the week by @georgeboss.bsky.social Lucid, original, precise, and engagingly written from start to finish.
Bank holiday trilogy. Neither philosophical nor political. Halfway between International Workers Day and intergalactic Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you). Just swanning around.
New pile of marking just arrived, so guess this sunset marks the end of my research aspirations this week.

Our issue on Public Political Philosophy is out in the world! tinyurl.com/PublicPolPhilo We asked about the gap between political philosophy and everyday politics: why it’s there, how to close it, whether we ought to. The answers were engaging, rigorous, exciting, often surprising. Do take a look!
Are there manipulative methods of argument in pol-phi? Ways of reasoning that distort/deceive? Is it eg manipulative 2 use a picture of your cats or endless rhetorical questions? Discussing this 2day w. hopefully non-manipulative feedback from @rebeccabuxton.bsky.social @wiglet1981.bsky.social
