I haven’t seen television as riveting as Netflix’s Legends since the end of Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal. Proper edge-of-your-seat stuff with excellent acting, scripting, and editing.

Have you heard the one about the football players in Santa Clara who think that their high-injury rate is due to EMF from the nearby power station? My day keeps getting interesting….
My article this week somehow has to do with this scene.
Oh my god the dietician who is telling everyone in the White House to only eat steak and sauerkraut doesn't wipe his ass.

I was today years old when I found out about this.
Oh my god I think I found the video.
This week, for @mcgilloss.bsky.social, I'm looking at the resurrection of an old and deeply problematic pseudoscience: Physiognomy.
Truly mind-boggling. A paper coming out of a Vietnamese university presented at a computer science conference on how AI can make physiognomy more accurate. Zero mention of how it’s a pseudoscience.

Where we've been headed for decades: putting the onus of health strictly at the foot of the individual. You died? Well, you had an underlying condition. Why? Because you didn't work out enough/ate poorly/didn't infrared-sauna enough. "Public health" is being turned into an oxymoron.
They think they're being clever eugenicists by saying that people with "underlying health issues" don't matter, but >75% of U.S. adults have a chronic condition (including 60% of age 18–34). So what they're really saying is "nobody matters, it's okay if everybody dies from inadequate regulation."
2022 Slovakian paper on using AI to recognize "abnormal human activities" to "simplify the work of security service." One such behaviour? Begging. "Begging: The videos feature people who annoy or harass surrounding people by begging for asking for money." Tell me science is apolitical, I beg you.

Remember, folks: they died WITH diarrhea, not OF diarrhea! Déjà vu....
Breaking News: Two deaths in Michigan have been linked to cyclospora. Both people who had the parasite also had underlying health issues.
Someone needs to draw up a graph of personal trust in a new commentator over time. - Discovery: oh wow, they're really good! - A few problematic takes: nobody's perfect! - One massive stupid take: OK, unsubscribing. This person's a moron.
Gotta love a paper the title of which includes this gem: "Real-Time Employee Emotion Detection system." To adapt Robin Williams' own words, it's not a dystopia but you can see it from here!
I'm finding this discussion about the potential rights of an artificial intelligence really interesting. Would an AI deserve welfare if it only had AGENCY? What about SENTIENCE? And then what about CONSCIOUSNESS? Where should we draw the line?
New ETV out for everyone! I'm joined by Jeff Sebo for another fun round of "who has moral status?". This time we're talking AI welfare, whether consciousnessness is required for moral status, and why this is a conversation worth having now. Enjoy!
I would be extremely nervous believing this without some pretty solid evidence. It strikes me as one of those takes that feels good if you’re anti-ai but is likely to promote overconfidence that could cause harm in various ways.
The truth about AI-generated content and writing is that, if you're actually paying attention and are actively engaged, you can tell the difference. AI only works in a society where people are dissociating and distracted and unengaged. That's the point of it. To just forward an unlived life.
I have a lot of tolerance for academic writing that, out of context, sounds callous, but when you write the following sentence in your paper, I'm gonna raise an eyebrow: "We need a dataset that is divided into 4 classes named Drug Addiction, Autism, Criminalism, and Normal."
Everyone is on high alert for AI contamination of their favourite artistic medium. I have to wonder how the arts will survive this looming crisis of confidence. (h/t @etvpod.bsky.social)

If prayers work for health, we don’t need to prove a god exists; we just need to document health improvements. Right? Unfortunately, when science studies prayer, strange questions surface. My latest for @mcgilloss.bsky.social www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/...
Can Science Even Test Prayers?
Praying to heal from illness is possibly the oldest form of alternative medicine. When that prayer is made to a divine being on behalf of someone else—like asking a god to heal an ailing relative—it i...
