Didn’t expect to wake up to the tragic news that Sam Neill has passed away. I loved him as Dr. Grant, loathed him as Inspector Campbell, and secretly wished he was my dad as Uncle Hec… and now I find myself writing his obituary. Strange world. Rest easy Sam Neill, a true great.

Sam Neill, legendary New Zealand actor and star of Jurassic Park and Event Horizon, has sadly died aged 78. Team Empire's thoughts are with Sam's friends, family, and loved ones at this very difficult time. He will be sorely missed. Read our tribute: www.empireonline.com/movies...

It was a real pleasure to write about I Am Frankelda — Mexico’s first (of many!) stop-motion animated feature — for Empire. This is a wildly inventive fantasy epic with musical numbers and visual flourishes that are SO exciting, and a story with heaps of heart and imagination.

"A phantasmagorical wonder, bursting at the seams with bright ideas and jaw-slackening designs." Mexico has its first stop-motion feature in the form of The Ambriz Brothers' epic musical fantasy I Am Frankelda — streaming on Netflix now. Read our review: www.empireonline.com/movies...

Does anyone have any dictaphone/digital voice recorder recommendations please? Don’t want to solely rely on my phone any longer for in-person interview recordings, and it’s long overdue!

This trailer has had 78 million views on YouTube alone in the last 48 hours?! That’s insane! And, as if any were needed, proof that audiences globally still clamour for and resonate deeply with handcrafted, human-made animation. As a fan of Colin Meloy’s books, this looks incredibly special.

The first trailer for Travis Knight and Laika's Wildwood teases a stop-motion dark fantasy adventure based on Colin Meloy's books. The film from the studio behind ParaNorman and Coraline arrives in cinemas later this year. Watch it here: www.empireonline.com/movies/news/...

Nice to see in these local council elections that the tried and tested philosophy of “things are shit for me and I’m angry so I want them to be shit for you and for you to be angry” is being upheld. Here’s hoping a sliver of common sense prevails in Wales. 🤞🏻

This sequence in Charlotte Regan’s new BBC series Mint is my favourite thing I’ve seen on TV this year so far. The use of Daughter’s ‘Medicine’ is perfect, and Laird and Coyle-Larner carry the intensity and intimacy of the moment beautifully. So much good TV on at the moment, long may it continue!

Something I’ve wanted to write for a long time, and something I couldn’t have had Stefan Golaszewski’s new drama Babies not existed. There’s very little writing out there from men on the pain of baby loss, but I decided to dig deep and put down some words in the hopes of helping change that.
