Here is what we found: -Nearly 40% of the inorganic carbon in Lakes Mai Ndombe and Tumba comes from ancient peat. -Microbes likely respire this old carbon deep underground, sending it to the lakes to vent like a "chimney" -It's yet unknown what this means in terms of Congo's peat stability
