Not even remotely pretending anymore that those at the #DOJ aren't acting as personal lawyers for #Trump rather than for the US […]

The #academia ladder kinda feels like at each step you're told once again by those one step above you that you don't have the expertise yet to talk about such and such. Maybe it's allowed once you're emeritus from a full professorship?

This is a blatant expression of #Whitenationalism by the #WhiteHouse. They would not be going after #OmarIlhan in this way if she wasn't who she is. (it's also insane that #JDVance is talking about this as if he's leading the #DOJ in this "investigation" and no one is batting an eyelash at how […]

[State sponsored violence] #Hegseth has such a dangerously warped conception of what it means to be a tough guy, let alone that the military should be the epitome of tough-guyness in the first place. This #execution is truly revolting, not only that it's happening but that it's being made […]

I guess it's fitting that #Trump would be handing out #science honors to #engineers and even #businesspeople rather than #scientists while cutting #funding for actual #scientificwork. (This isn't to say engineers aren't important, but it's no surprise that this admin has no idea what the […]

There's like a 0.0001% chance that #BrendanCarr gives a damn what any American other than #Trump thinks, but I sent in a public comment anyway. It only takes a minute, so I suggest others do, as well. #FCC #USpol #elections #midterms #AI […]

Every time I see one of these articles about how cracks are growing in #MAGA and in support for #Trump, it just sounds like wishful thinking. Just because you can find a handful of people who've changed their mind about him or a single poll where his already consistently low approval is slightly […]

I wish #film and #music critics didn't hand out stars but instead just wrote about who a #movie or #album might appeal to and who it wouldn't. #criticism

I highly recommend attending the #Créole #Culture Day to anyone who is anywhere near the #GrandCoteau area of #Louisiana on October 3rd. Not only is the event going to be fun and full of valuable activities, it is put on by some very passionate people who are beyond deserving of the support […]

How can you tell when #school voucher supporters haven't thought a damn about what they mean for #education? They promote vouchers for #students with #IEPs to go to #privateschools where those IEPs no longer need to be honored. #autism #neurodivergent #privateschool #IEP […]

#Labor #activists were literally killed by businessmen. We tend to gloss over this on #LaborDay. #HenryFord had his private police force fire on #strikers in #Detroit, killing at least 5. The #Rockefellers had private militias murder 21 people, including children, in #Ludlow, #Colorado. These […]

RE: https://tomkahe.com/@GiftArticles/117185557660474519 Quite insane how blatantly #colonialist these activities are. Rather than just bringing us back to the 1950s, #Trump also wants to bring back a 1600s mindset. I will not be surprised at all if Americans see gas prices drop and just gloss […]

Simply unbelievable. I've never seen a #boxer dominate their opponent so clearly in a world championship fight and then all at once completely and utterly run out of steam. #Itauma literally beat himself by not having the endurance to keep up a moderate pace for more than 6 rounds even without […]

The extremely slow restoration of electricity in #Gary, #Indiana, a primarily #Black city, has been explained as being related to the city being hit worse than others, but the storm in question stretched from NW #Illinois all the way to south #Ohio, and no one else in Indiana is experiencing an […]

[Original post on h4.io]

I never bother to learn other people's #songs, but I've been checking out open G #blues tracks to learn by ear to see if I can pick up new tricks. The problem is, many solo blues #musicians don't seem to tune up very often, so really they're playing in open G# or open Gb or maybe even 2 steps […]

#Chicago north #suburbs are insanely out of touch. Just came across someone complaining that their #propertytaxes went up $12,000 this year. This person must own a home that's valued over a $1,000,000 and they're crying about how unfair #taxes are. And this is basically all I'm seeing on […]

#HarryShearer, who does many of the voices for The #Simpsons, has long resided in #NewOrleans, to my surprise. I guess that explains why this #NOLA #food episode felt so accurate. (I was actually just curious how old the voice actors for the show are. He's the oldest of the main ones at 82.) […]

Fitting mass numbers of #Haitians in the #US with ankle monitors is extremely on the nose. You're practically one step away from placing them on sugar plantations. This is what a racialized social system looks like in its most obvious forms. (And of course #Trump has a private financial stake in […]

I have no words that can express how bad this move is. This is the epitome of what a racialized social system looks like. #education #US #USpol #racism #poverty https://apnews.com/article/head-start-preschool-trump-6207d2fb0934df35722cc2505b679131?utm_source=copy&utm_medium=share

Hm, seems you can add #RSS feeds to your #Mastodon feed using @birb. Gonna try it out for a couple of the big #linguistics #journals in my field.

#Slavery in the #US is not exactly ancient history. #EubieBlake was a prominent #Broadway and #jazz #composer and #pianist. He lived until 1983. Both of his parents were enslaved. #music #race #sociology https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eubie_Blake

Just for kicks, I checked the prices for tickets to the 3 day #punk #festival #RiotFest in #Chicago. One day is $115. Two days is exactly double, $230. Three days is almost exactly triple, $340. Why is the only discount a whole $5, and why is it only for three day tickets? Very capitalist for a […]

At first, I thought it sounded like a #theramin in this #song, but it turns out it's a slide #whistle. Either way, it creates such a surprising, unique, otherworldly sound for such an old #recording. #MaRainey #blues #slidewhistle #music https://youtu.be/HpLF2BBTc74?si=GYDcsKX_mW2-IZOR

It was already so difficult for me to call #DesPlaines, #Illinois /dɛs pleɪnz/ rather than /de plɛn/, but I just learned that #Marseilles, #IL is pronounced /marseɪlz/ and #LaGrange, IL is /lə greɪndʒ/. #linguistics #phonetics #phonology #French #English #languagecontact

I feel like there's some hidden #research out there on diphthongization of the NURSE vowel in #American #English. I get that it's rare these days, but that I've never seen anything but a passing mention that it ever existed and those mentions being limited to #NYC seems strange given how […]

It looks like you're standing near a smokey BBQ outside in the #Chicago area. https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/chicago/60608/air-quality-index/348308 #Canada #wildfires

We should certainly celebrate #IndependanceDay, but it's also a good time to reflect on the fact that we are an imperfect country that has failed people and continues to do so. The ideals of our founding were not achieved on the #4thofJuly in 1776 and still haven't been today. Ideals are […]
