Antibiotic-recalcitrant Salmonella exploits post-antibiotic microbiota disruption to achieve virulence-dependent transmission
Newson et al. show that antibiotics not only reduce Salmonella infection but also disrupt the gut microbiota, enabling relapse and transmission from tissue-lodged persister reservoirs. Relapse requires intracellular virulence factors and produces clonal populations. Microbiota transfer between hosts blocks pathogen relapse-associated blooms, revealing how the host-pathogen-microbiota axis shapes transmission.
