Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism at Centre for Language and Cognition @rug.nl - Heritage language education, translanguaging, critical approaches

An opportunity has opened at my research group for a curious and driven candidate to do their PhD on multiling and edu on the Dutch/German borderlands. Dutch and/or Ger are desired, and Eng a must. Upon approval, the position would be excellently funded and supported. Email me with questions

Conversation with my dad during his visit in the Netherlands: Dad - ¿Qué es esto, hijo? ¿Leche? Me - Sí...leche [reads the label and translates from Dutch and English into Spanish]...evaporada...que le han quitado la mitad de la crema... Dad - Semidesnatada. Me - 😒 Sí. Dad - Pobrecito, mi hijo...

Still some days left to apply for our PhD program in Multilingualism and Migration. Fully-funded, well-supported and excellently located in Groningen. Excited to read so many wonderful proposals already. I'll consider supporting other strong candidates for competitive funding w/in the school.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 8, I'll be giving a (free, open) guest lecture titled "Centering Repertoires, not Target Languages in the Heritage Language Classroom" as part of the Spanish Heritage Language Education Series organised by my very dear Jenny Leeman 💜 out of George Mason University. Join us :)

Language is not a system of communication. It's much more. It is how culture is articulated, shared, transmitted. How identities are forged, performed. How knowledge is disseminated, maintained, developed. Ultimately, language is how individuals, communities and societies take shape over time.

Today's university in crisis is Kingston, which is cutting all the departments and subjects below, a savage retrenchment that won't even make them half of the £20m savings they need. Every day will be like this until something is done.

Posting so that I don't forget: prioritising my family, my health, and balancing work as part of life helped me turn a terrible 2023/early 2024 into a lovely late 2024. I look forward to this new year in ways I haven't for a while. Wishing everyone fulfillment and health ❤️ #academicsky #academia

Today, after our last Second Language Acquisition, Teaching & Assessment module lecture, with some of my wonderful MA Applied Linguistics students. They're sharp, talented, hardworking and humble. They also happen to be funny, chatty and friendly. A great (and a little tired) cohort.

Me and my Applied Linguistics MA students today after after our last class of the semester.
