Yesterday was sculptor Hiram Powers' birthday, so let's look at his The Greek Slave (1843) championed by abolitionists and viewed by over 100,000 on tour and at the Crystal Palace (1851). It later inspired a fascinating advertisement by N. Fairbank & Co entitled, The Slave of Grease (1870-1900).
