Past-President of the Canadian Medical Association World Medical Association Representative for Canada Public Health Physician Passionate about physician wellness and public health

I am deeply honoured to be appointed Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer. It is a privilege to serve Canadians at a time when trusted, evidence-based public health leadership is more important than ever.

The CMA congratulates Past-President, Dr. Joss Reimer (@jossreimer.bsky.social) on being named Chief Public Health Officer of Canada. We look forward to working with you in your new role to support the health of Canadians. Statement ⬇️

Eye-opening stats from the recent CFIB/CMA survey on physician paperwork. We were already feeling it, and now we have the stats to back it up. Patients deserve our full attention, and doctors deserve a healthy work/life balance. Let’s move forward with the solutions we know can make that happen.

Canadian Medical Association@cmadocs.bsky.social · 9mo ago

Collectively, Canadian physicians are spending about 20 million hours on unnecessary paperwork. Eliminating those tasks would free up the equivalent of 9,000 full time physicians. With a growing shortage of family doctors, this is the moment to act.

Artificial intelligence is part of our reality. As health care professionals, it can make a positive impact on our workload, administrative burden and rates of burnout – but it is also our responsibility to ensure we’re integrating it properly.

Canadian Medical Association@cmadocs.bsky.social · 9mo ago

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping health systems everywhere. While each technology has specific payoffs and risks, the @who.int issued broad guidelines in 2024 for integrating #AI into health care — since endorsed by the CMA. Here’s the breakdown 👇

Alberta’s proposed private care plan will not reduce wait times. It will worsen them. The evidence is consistent in Canada and abroad: parallel public–private systems lead to poorer outcomes and longer waits, with many patients paying twice for care.

Canadian Medical Association@cmadocs.bsky.social · 11mo ago

Doctors across Canada are deeply concerned that the #Alberta government’s proposed private care plan will leave more Albertans waiting even longer to access health care. The CMA is calling on the government to reconsider this proposal, and focus on known solutions to support public health care.

So sad & angry about this. Sad for a family who was just trying to make the best decisions they could. This profound grief didn't need to happen. Angry because whether for money, influence or political gain people are still spreading disinformation that is killing children www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Profound health inequities persist in Canada. We need to work together in humility to build a health system that upholds Indigenous rights with the goal of eliminating these inequities. I encourage you to spend some time observing #NDTR reflecting on your own reconciliation journey in the year ahead

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to acknowledge the devastating and lasting impacts of Canada’s residential school system on First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples. We also honour the strength and spirit of Survivors, their families and their communities. #NDTR

Today, September 28, marks five years since Joyce Echaquan, a 37-year-old Atikamekw woman, died in a Quebec hospital after she was denied the care she needed. A coroner’s inquest confirmed that racism and prejudice were factors in her death.

When people act on false health claims, they miss out on proven treatments, put themselves at risk and strain our #CDNhealth system. That's how #misinformation harms and it's why we must act. Canada's medical, research & clinical community is speaking up: #ScienceMatters. Our joint statement 👇

Throughout my career, I’ve seen how science has shaped safer, more effective care for patients. But I’ve also seen how misinformation can cause real harm. We all share a responsibility to defend science and safeguard public trust. #ScienceMatters

Medical education should reflect the people it serves. With accreditation now fully sovereign, Canada is safeguarding equity, diversity and inclusion in how we train future physicians. A proud step forward for our learners and communities. #MedEd

The AFMC & the CMA are pleased to celebrate the first medical school year under a fully sovereign Canadian accreditation system. We stand together in support of access to education, diversity in the medical profession and #AccessToCare for equity-deserving populations in Canada and around the world.

Our system needs a lot of work. But when private care is typically more expensive and lower quality (while also stealing docs and nurses from the public system), it can't be treated as a long-term solution.

Danielle Smith had a whole conversation with a naturopath about the importance of prevention, but her govt is going to charge Albertans $100+ to prevent COVID. FYI - cost of a hospital admission is $1000/day. Anti-vax right wing govts are going to make everyone sick and bankrupt health care.
